The decision to undergo a vasectomy reversal is not an easy one. While a vasectomy is fairly easy, quick and painless, a vasectomy reversal is much the opposite. The only reason to have a vasectomy reversal is to conceive a child. While the reversal surgery is painful, it isn't 100 percent effective. Only about 50 percent go on to father children after the procedure. For this reason, it is important to do everything you can to increase your chances of getting pregnant. Much of this preparation is done before the fact. If you are thinking about a vasectomy reversal, this article will help increase your chances of conceiving a baby.
Instructions
1. Schedule a fertility appointment with your partner before undergoing a vasectomy reversal. There is no reason you should go through a painful procedure if there is any reason you and your partner will have trouble conceiving under normal circumstances. Make sure the woman has no fertility issues. If she does have fertility problems, there are other options, like sperm aspiration and In-vitro fertilization.
2. Wear a scrotum supporter. These can be purchased at the doctor's office or a durable medical equipment store. They assist with the healing process and should be worn for 5 or 6 weeks after a vasectomy reversal.
3. Wait until your body is completely healed. As opposed to the original vasectomy, a reversal has a very painful recovery. In fact, sharp pains are still felt in the scrotum area for 3 or 4 days after surgery. It can take several weeks for the pain to subside entirely. During this time, engage in absolutely no sexual activity to allow your body time to heal.
4. Wear boxers instead of briefs once the 6 week post-surgical time frame expires. This keeps your testicles cooler. The cooler the testicles, typically, the higher the sperm count. Likewise, stay out of saunas or hot baths for the same reason. Sperm die in hot conditions.
5. Drink water instead of alcohol while you actively try to conceive. Alcohol, and caffeine for that matter, lower male sperm count. Of course, you don't have to eliminate all alcohol from your diet, but severely cut back when you know your partner is ovulating.
