Novelon, often sold under the brand names Desogen and Ortho-Cept, is a drug used frequently as a contraceptive. As is common with prescription drugs, Novelon may cause a number of side effects depending on the particular individual and dose size.
Identification
Novelon is a prescription drug which is classified as a combination of estrogen and progestin. In order to effectively prevent pregnancy, Novelon blocks the release of the egg in the female and alters the composition of the lining of the uterus so that it is more difficult for sperm to reach the uterus. Novelon is intended for use by females only.
Common Side Effects
Although many users of this medication have experienced no or minor side effects, the use of Novelon may lead to the following common side effects: weight changes, headaches, dizziness, nausea, breast tenderness and enlargement, stomach cramps, appetite changes, vomiting, and vaginal spotting. Though common, these side effects can become more serious if one or several intensify or persist. In such an event, seek immediate medical attention.
Serious Side Effects
Although rare, Drugs.com reports that users may experience the following serious side effects: "breast lumps; calf/leg pain or swelling; changes in vision; chest pain or heaviness in the chest; coughing up blood; difficulty wearing contact lenses; dark urine or light-colored bowel movements; dizziness or fainting; fever; loss of appetite; missed menstrual period; mood/mental changes; numbness of an arm or leg; persistent or recurrent abnormal vaginal bleeding; severe pain or tenderness in the stomach area; shortness of breath; sleeplessness; slurred speech; sudden severe headache (migraine); sudden shortness of breath; swelling of fingers or ankles; vaginal infection; vomiting; weakness or fatigue; weakness or numbness in the arm or leg; yellowing of the skin or eyes". Severe allergic reaction recognized by severe skin irritation and swelling of the face may also occur as a result of use. Contact your doctor immediately if any of the preceding side effects occur.
Usage
Always take Novelon exactly as prescribed to you. According to Drugs.com, Novelon is often taken on the first day of an individual's period or on the first Sunday after the period has begun. Usual dose size is one pill per day which is usually taken at the same time each day. Never skip a dose and be sure to take all of the pills within the packet.
Warning
Bleeding caused by the use of Novelon should not be a sign to discontinue the product unless it is particularly heavy or lasts longer than a week. Novelon will not prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Never use in children or those who are pregnant or breast feeding. Smoking while taking Novelon can increase the risk for heart disease.
