Delaware offers Medicaid to low-income families with children, pregnant women, people over age 65 and disabled people. Medicare helps these groups pay for such medical expenses as doctors' visits, prescriptions, hospital stays and mental health services. Medicaid will also pay Medicare deductibles, co-pays and premiums. Although Medicaid is a federally funded program, Delaware makes its own eligibility rules and benefit amounts.
Citizenship and Residency
You must be a U.S. citizen, U.S national or a legal immigrant with at least five years of U.S residency. You must also be a permanent resident of Delaware.
Income
For Medicaid qualification purposes, Delaware counts earned income, such as money from a job, as well as unearned income, such as unemployment, Social Security, child support and pension or retirement payments. The income limits change every year. The limits depend on the Medicaid program you apply for and the number of people in your household. Generally, your household income must fall under 100 to 133 percent of the federal poverty level.
Documents
Delaware Medicaid requires you to submit documents to prove your citizenship and identity, such as birth certificates, Social Security numbers or Immigration and Naturalization Service documents for all household members who are applying for Medicaid. You will also have to provide housing and residency documents, such as a house deed, lease and utility bills. You can prove your income by supplying pay stubs, tax documents and statements from Social Security or other unearned income.
