What Is Spatial Recognition

What Is Spatial Recognition?

Spatial recognition is general awareness of your surroundings and the relationship of your body to your surroundings. Spatial recognition keeps you from bumping into walls and allows your to button your shirts.

Senses Involved

All of your senses are involved in spatial recognition, not just the obvious tactile sense. Your other senses provide information that together is integrated into your awareness. This awareness produces a perception; in other words, your senses gather all the information and put it together to create understanding of your surroundings.

Other Uses

Higher level of spatial recognition can be helpful in the ability to think abstractly. Abstract thinking requires the ability to organize ideas and classify them. Classification and organization both require a spatial recognition ability. As balametrics.com points out, the abilities that can benefit from a high level of spatial recognition include math and music.

Degradation of Spatial Recognition

Spatial recognition is a learned skill and is also a skill that can degrade over time, resulting in poor spatial recognition. Declines in your senses can be a result of aging or even an injury. A head injury can interfer with many of your senses, even possibly incapacitating them. When one or more senses are gone, there will be gaps in your awareness, thus a decline in your spatial recognition.
