The Healing Power Of Sound

The Healing Power of Sound

Our bodies and the world around us are in a constant state of vibration. These sounds can make us feel joy or sadness. The therapeutic application of sound to the mind and body has been shown to boost the immune system, lower blood pressure, slow breathing, reduce stress and relieve pain. For thousands of years, the healing power of sound has been recognized and practiced by many cultures across the globe.

Rhythmic Breathing

Rhythmic breathing is the most basic sound healing method, based upon hearing our mother's breathing and heartbeat in the womb. Rhythmic breathing harnesses the healing power of sound by increasing awareness, calming the mind, promoting peace, clarity and harmony in your life.

Drums

One of the most ancient forms of sound healing is drumming. Studies have shown that the repetitiveness of drumming changes the activity of brain waves, inducing calmness and focused awareness. One study has shown that just one hour of group drumming showed a significant enhancement in the immune system.

Voice

The healing power of the human voice has long been known to re-energize and restore health to the mind and body. Humming, singing and chanting release stress and repressed emotions, and this has a neurochemical effect on the body. Toning--to make an elongated vowel sound for an extended period--stimulates the digestive system and is effective in relieving insomnia.

Notes

Fabien Maman demonstrated the healing power of sound by using a xylophone to destroy cancer cells in the early 1980s at the National Centre for Scientific Research. As Maman discovered, certain musical notes can be used to produce changes in the electromagnetic fields of cells.

Tuning Forks

Tuning forks are said to employ the healing power of sound by connecting to the vestibular system and causing deep relaxation in seconds, instantaneously reducing stress, increasing blood flow, enhancing immunity and transcending to higher levels of consciousness.

Crystal Bowls

The primordial healing sounds of crystal bowls are said to penetrate deep within the cellular structure of the body. They release trauma, tension, stress and physical and emotional toxins. Crystal bowls clear the chakras and nadis, allowing light to flow through them and promote peaceful and stable energy.

Music

The healing power of music has been found to particularly benefit the human body by improving concentration and promoting positive emotions. Classical music has also been shown to have a calming effect on babies in the womb.
