Naturopathy Tips

Naturopathy is a broad term for a form of health care that uses natural methods and substances to cure illness. The goal of naturopathy is to prevent disease and heal the body without the use of standard allopathic medications.

By assessing the body from a holistic perspective, a naturopathic physician can recommend specific herbs and alternative treatments that will help heal the patient and treat the root cause of the symptom or disease.

Naturopathy encompasses many alternative forms of healing through herbology, acupuncture, massage therapy, yoga, breath work and Ayurvedic practices, for example.

Herbal Tonics

Created from specific flowers that are known for their healing properties, flower essences may be used to help heal emotional issues or trauma. Flower essences are completely safe to give to children and may be an effective natural way to help a child become more emotionally balanced.

As recommended in the holistic guide, "The 38 Bach Flower Essences," two drops of the chosen flower essence may be added to milk, water or fruit juice. This dosage should be taken four times a day until the child has recovered.

Rock rose flower essence may be given to help a child who has just been through a traumatic experience. Vervain flower essence is recommended for those who are very high-strung or overdemanding. Walnut flower essence may be given to those who find it difficult to adapt to change and are overly sensitive to atmospheres and influences.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Naturopathy from an Eastern perspective is known as traditional Chinese medicine. Acupuncture is one natural method that TCM uses to remove energy blocks in the body through the use of very fine needles placed at specific meridian points.

TCM also focuses on supporting and preventing disease through ingesting specific foods or herbs. To help increase immune function, Dr. Andrew Weil recommends the Chinese tonic called Zhu Ling, which is made from wild mushrooms which are being studied for their effect on lung cancer.

Ayurveda

In India, the ancient system of healing called Ayurveda is used to balance and heal the body. Doing yoga and meditating daily are effective ways to bring the body into balance naturally. Eating vegetarian foods are said to bring nourishment to the body. As naturopathy encourages eliminating all toxins and unnecessary chemicals, choosing organic fruits and vegetables is encouraged to eliminate the body's exposure to pesticides. To help clear toxins from the body, a natural approach such as taking a three-day juice fast is recommended to help revive lagging energy and metabolism.
