Natural Remedies For Gum Disease

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is the No. 1 cause of adult tooth loss. Approximately 95 percent of people over age 65 have some form of gum disease. The early stage of periodontal disease is known as gingivitis, in which a buildup of plaque produces toxins that irritate the gums. They then become red, puffy, and begin to bleed. This can advance to periodontitis, in which pockets of bacteria cause the gums and teeth to separate. There are natural treatments that can ease inflammation and reverse or prevent infection.

Herbal Treatments

Aloe gel applied to the gums can soothe inflammation. Clove oil alleviates gum pain and is very effective against bacteria. Use 2 to 3 drops in a quarter-cup of warm water as a mouthwash up to three times daily. Goldenseal mouthwash is antibacterial and stops bleeding. Green tea is also a strong antibacterial agent and halts the conversion of starches into sugar. This is helpful because sugar causes many problems like decay and cavities. Take 240 milligrams three times a day or drink a cup of tea three to five times a day. Scutellaria can reverse gingivitis by producing collagen growth. Take 250 to 500 milligrams three times a day. Tea tree and thyme oil are both very effective at reducing bacteria in the mouth. Witch hazel tincture prevents inflammation. Use 2 teaspoons in a quarter-cup of warm water twice a day as a mouthwash.

Herbs and pharmaceutical agents are assigned doses based on one of their most important pharmacological properties, therapeutic range. Therapeutic range is the smallest dose that provides any medicinal benefit to the largest dose safe for consumption. Herbs are generally safe and overdose or serious complications are unlikely. However, stick to the suggested doses as taking more is unlikely to produce additional benefit and can cause negative side effects.

Other Suggestions

Eat a lot of blackberries, blueberries, elderberries, raspberries, and strawberries. They contain substances that make the gum tissue stronger. A mix of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda worked into the gums with a toothbrush can ease soreness. Massage gums several times a day with the fingers. Avoid smoking; it delays the healing process.
