Claritin D is an allergy medication that contains an antihistamine and pseudoephedrine. Claritin-D may be bought over-the-counter and is used to control allergy symptoms. Claritin-D should not be taken by everyone, especially those individuals who have certain health conditions and those who have adverse reactions to the medicine.


Function


Clartin D contains loratadine, which is an antihistamine and pseudoephedrine, which is a decongestant. Claritin D may be used to relieve symptoms such as sinus and nasal congestion. It also helps with other allergy symptoms such as sinus pressure, runny nose, itchy eyes, watery eyes, sneezing, itchy throat and itchy nose.


Time Frame


Claritin D comes in two different formulas. One is called Claritin-D 12-Hour. When using this formula, you can take one pill every 12 hours as needed for allergy symptom relief. The other formula is Clartin D 24-hour. When using the 24-hour formula, you can take one pill every 24 hours.


Effects


The loratadine in Claritin D may cause side effects such as sleepiness, headache, fatigue and dry mouth. The pseudoephedrine in Claritin D may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, restlessness, weakness and headache.


Other side effects of Claritin D may include dizziness, tremors, fast heart rate and an irregular heart rhythm.








Some individuals may have a reaction to Claritin D that causes them to feel nervous, keyed-up and unable to sleep. You should stop using Claritin D if it prevents you from sleeping.


Considerations


Claritin D should not be given to anyone under the age of 12. Also, if you are a breast-feeding or pregnant woman, you should consult your physician before using Claritin D. Also, you should consult your physician if you have any of the following conditions: liver disease, kidney disease, an enlarged prostate gland, thyroid disease or diabetes.


Warnings


Claritin D, along with other similar decongestants, can cause your blood pressure to rise. This side effect is especially dangerous if you already have high blood pressure. If you have hypertension, you should consult your doctor before taking Claritin D. Also, you should consult your doctor if you have heart disease.
