Topical sulphur (sulfur) is effective for many people in treating mild to moderate acne. It can clear whiteheads and blackheads, but does not work for the more severe cystic acne. Sulphur is sometimes combined with other effective ingredients in various brands of acne treatment products, and is available in both over-the-counter and prescription-strength items.
How It Works
When skin becomes oily, dead skin cells cannot be shed properly. These cells clog pores, which creates a favorable environment for the anaerobic bacteria that causes acne. Clogged pores also result in debris and sebum buildup, causing blackheads and whiteheads. Sulphur works against acne by causing peeling, or exfoliation, of dead skin cells from the surface layer of skin. Sulphur reduces oiliness as well.
Types
Sulphur acne treatment is available in cream, gel, lotion, liquid, mask, ointment and soap. You should wash affected areas of the skin with the soap, dry thoroughly, and then apply the preferred medication according to the directions. It is important to leave sulphur acne treatment on only as long as the instructions specify, to avoid excessive skin irritation.
Identification
Sulphur is a chemical element which many people associate with its distinctive odor, reminiscent of rotten eggs. Because of the odor, sulphur acne treatment products include fragrances and other more pleasant-smelling ingredients to mask the sulphur smell.
Additional Ingredients
Other ingredients sometimes included with sulphur in acne treatment medications include benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and resorcinol. Benzoyl peroxide penetrates skin and kills acne-causing anaerobic bacteria by providing oxygen. Resorcinol and salicylic acid help remove dead skin cells more effectively, thus preventing pore blockage.
Brands
Sulfoxyl is an acne treatment containing sulphur and benzoyl peroxide, while products with sulphur and resorcinol include Sulforcin, Rezamid, and Acnomel. Bioelements Amino Mask includes sulphur with salicylic acid. Some Clearasil treatment creams also include sulphur, as does Joesoef Anti-Acne Soap and Thylox Acne Treatment Soap.
