Chiropractic Care For The Neck

Chiropractic Care for the Neck

Chiropractic is the manual manipulation of the bones of the spine and sometimes the extremities to put them into proper alignment. It is believed that bones that are not positioned correctly can affect the health by putting uncomfortable pressure on nerves, impeding blood flow and neurological signals and by affecting muscular balance.

The Neck

The neck is one place where we often feel strain. This can lead to pain the shoulders and headache. Neck pain is often caused by sleeping, poor posture, time at the computer and whiplash. Chiropractic manipulation can help relieve neck pain by repositioning the vertebrae of the neck. Whiplash is one injury, often caused by car accidents, that often involves chiropractic care.

Pros

Chiropractic manipulation can often bring immediate relief of neck pain, shoulder pain and headaches. There are several manual techniques that chiropractors can use to address misalignment. Different patients prefer certain techniques over others due to effectiveness and comfort. Some techniques are so gentle that they use no force and are very safe.

Cons

Poorly performed chiropractic can be harmful. The worse case is stroke, but this is rare. For this reason, it is important to learn something about a chiropractor before you allow an adjustment. Find out about the techniques used too. Often, you can expect to do well with the same chiropractic as those with your body type and problems. If you are sensitive, choose someone who uses the gentlest techniques.

When to See a Chiropractor

You do not need to go to a chiropractor at the first sign of a headache or stiff neck. If you have significant pain, cannot function or the pain does not go away or worsens in a day or two, then you need some help. If you have been involved in any kind of accident, it is a good idea to see a chiropractor. Get your case documented with x-rays and make sure you are alright. Symptoms may not show up immediately.

Good Adjustment

To get the most from your visit, relax and let your body be limp. It is easier for the doctor and for you if there is no resistance. Anything you can do to loosen the muscles prior to your visit is helpful, such as a massage, warm compresses on the neck or a hot bath or hot shower. After the adjustment, apply cold compresses and rest for about 30 minutes for best results.
