Hematite is a popular mineral for jewelry.
The word hematite is derived from the Greek word meaning "blood." While hematite is a silver metallic color, crushing it into powder produces a crystal called red ocher. This red powder has been used in ancient ceremonies as well as having uses today in dying and paint preparation. Like many crystals and minerals, hematite is used in alternative medicine therapies for its supposed metaphysical properties.
Calming Anxiety and Clearing the Mind
Hematite is believed to calm anxiety and clear the mind. Egyptians used hematite to calm anxiety and wore it as amulets. Known as the "stone of the mind," hematite is thought to stimulate concentration and focus. It is also associated with the root chakra, which is located at the base of the spine and governs feelings of survival. That may be a reason American Indians used the red ocher produced by hematite for war paint and in important rituals.
Healing
Hematite was known as the "bloodstone" to ancient Egyptians and they used the powder to stop bleeding. Scientists believe this may have worked from the iron occurring in hematite. Because hematite is magnetic, it is thought to draw impurities out of the blood. Holistic healers believe hematite can be used to strengthen the immune system and relieve pain. It is also associated with the healing of the kidney, through detoxification, and spinal alignment, as hematite is thought to balance the body.
Metaphysical Uses
Hematite is thought to enhance astral projection and promote your ability to find inner knowledge and peace, perhaps through its mind clearing properties. Holding hematite during meditation or wearing it in jewelry is believed to trigger its metaphysical and healing properties. Minerals should be "cleansed" monthly to remove the negative energies they have absorbed. You can cleanse hematite by lying it overnight in the light of the full moon.
