Pregnancy After Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes fatty tissue from the body. It's used frequently to re-contour the abdomen, thighs and arms. Since pregnancy causes significant body changes, many women are undecided about liposuction before pregnancy.

Procedure

Liposuction is performed by a plastic surgeon. The doctor uses a thin tube, called a cannula, to suck isolated fatty tissue out of the body and re-contour areas of the body. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss.

Pregnancy

Plastic surgeons say it is completely safe to become pregnant after liposuction.

Weight Gain

You'll gain weight while pregnant and lose it after the baby is born. But the fatty deposits that were removed by liposuction should not return.

Fat Cells

If you gain a substantial amount of weight while pregnant, it is possible for new fat cells to grow. Additionally, the fat cells that weren't removed by liposuction can grow larger during pregnancy.

Expense

Because liposuction is an expensive cosmetic treatment that is usually not covered by insurance, many women postpone liposuction until after childbearing is over to get the maximum benefit.
