Varicose Veins Herbal Treatment

Varicose veins occur when increased blood pressure dilates the veins, and the valves no longer seal properly. This makes it difficult to push the blood back to all parts of the body, which results in the blood pooling up in the vein instead. Several different treatments can be used, but many people like to rely on herbal medications before testing conventional medical treatments.

Horse Chestnut and Witch Hazel

Horse chestnut can be taken orally and can also be used as a topical ointment on the surface of the skin. It helps increase blood circulation, tightens veins so they constrict less, and reduces redness and swelling. Aescin, found in horse chestnut, has the ability to constrict the walls of the veins, making it more difficult for blood and fluid to permeate through the vein and into other organs or passages. If you have liver or kidney disease or illnesses, you should avoid horse chestnut because can constrict blood flow.

Witch hazel can be applied to the skin's surface on top of the vein twice a day. An alcoholic extract, widely used by Europeans, can be ingested and is known to constrict the veins and allow blood to pass through easily without buildup. It can cause some skin irritation if you use it more than twice a day, so avoid it if you happen to have an allergic reaction.

Herbal Treatments

Vitamin C, although not an herb, helps reduce blood clotting due to its bioflavonoids and rutin. It also promotes natural healing and helps to strengthen blood vessels so they do not allow the buildup of blood.

Bilberry helps form connective tissue and strengthen capillaries in the body through which blood flows.

Gingko and hawthorn are both good for the body's natural strengthening of its blood vessels and improve circulation.

Omega 3 and flax seed oil are essential fatty acids that reduce inflammation and any pain associated with varicose veins. Although they do not cure them, they aid in the healing process.
