Foods Low In Carbohydrates

Low-carbohydrate diets are popular because they offer quicker weight loss while allowing people to eat real, natural foods instead of processed ones. Everyone from celebrities to homemakers knows about low-carb diets, but may not know which foods are best to eat on a low carbohydrate diet and why.


Benefits for Diabetics


Foods high in carbohydrates cause blood sugar spikes, and keep blood sugar levels elevated for longer periods of time because it takes the body longer to process them. Diabetics should eat foods low in carbohydrates to keep blood sugar levels regulated throughout the day.


Vegetables


Low-carbohydrate vegetables are rich in fiber, minerals, vitamins and antioxidants that help fight disease and improve overall health. Leafy greens, asparagus, broccoli, celery, cucumber, squash, green beans, mushroom, onions, peppers and spinach are some of the healthiest low-carb vegetables.


Fruits








Contrary to popular belief, fruit can be eaten on a low-carbohydrate diet; the right fruits just have to be chosen. Strawberries, blueberries, kumquats, prunes and tangerine are some of the best low-carb fruits and should be included in a well-rounded diet.


Meats


Meat is a staple of a low-carbohydrate diet. Eat skinless chicken and turkey, lower-fat steaks such as sirloin, and pick ground beef with the lowest fat content to ensure optimal health benefits.


Dairy


Check the carbohydrate count in all dairy products, and only consume those with the lowest carb levels. Some low-fat versions of dairy products are processed, so should not be included in a healthy low-carb diet.


Grains


Whole grain, high-fiber breads and wraps can be included in a low-carbohydrate eating plan on occasion. Even grains with more nutritional value are higher in carbs than other foods, so should not be eaten every day.
