Extract Jojoba Oil

You can either buy jojoba oil or extract the oil from the seeds yourself.

Jojoba oil is an extremely effective moisturizing liquid taken from the seed of the jojoba tree. It is often used in moisturizers, acne treatments, hair conditioner, makeup remover, lip balm and massage oil. It softens skin and hair and has antibacterial and anti-aging properties as it promotes the growth of new skin cells. It has also proved beneficial for those with skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis and in the treatment of arthritis, dandruff and eye diseases. You can either buy jojoba oil or extract the oil from the seeds yourself. To extract the oil from the seeds make sure the seeds contain 50 to 55 percent of their weight in oil. Use a seed oil press to extract oil, which should contain all the necessary components for seed extraction.

Instructions

1. Jojoba oil is an extremely effective moisturizing liquid taken from the seed of the jojoba tree.

Lubricate the washer that goes on the expeller screw with edible oil. The expeller screw is an extremely large screw and the washer looks like a round metal ring. Insert the washer on the screw shaft and insert the shaft in the press cage, which looks like a large tube. The shaft should come out the other end of the cage. Screw on the press cage cap followed by the terminal adjustment bolt (simply a large bolt) on the end of the cap.

2. Attach the crank arm, which is what you will be using to press the seeds, to the screw shaft with a bolt. The crank arm bears a slight resemblance to a small hammer. Tighten the bolt securely with a wrench.

3. Place a small vial of colored lamp oil with a wick under the press cage and secure the lamp with a rubber band. You should notice a place for the vial under the press cage. Light the lamp wick and allow the press cage to heat for 10 minutes.

4. Place the jojoba seeds in a removable plastic lid/bin and place it on top of the press cage. Try cutting a plastic water bottle in two and screwing the opening to the top of the press cage. Place a small jar under the press cage to catch the oil. Turn the crank to extract oil. Keep a bowl underneath the press cage cap to catch any seed shells, also known as "press cake." Try to turn the crank at 23 to 25 rotations per minute. Use more seeds if desired.
