Substance abuse is a major cause of physical and emotional problems for many people. Treatment for substance abuse needs to be extremely individually focused and many factors need to be considered. The plan needs to take into account the type of substance being abused, the economic and social environment of the patient, family history, mental health issues and the general attitudes, physical and emotional needs and the behavioral routines of the patient.
Instructions
1. Begin by identifying the substance that is being abused and whether there are medications to assist in the withdrawal from the substance, as is the case with opiate addiction, where methadone is used. This will not be needed with every form of substance withdrawal.
2. Understand that withdrawal from a substance can be painful and measures can be taken to ease this process. The patient will need to regain healthy body and brain functions. During this period it may be necessary to take the patient out of his immediate environment. Massage, over-the-counter pain killers and relaxation therapies may be of assistance during this initial stage.
3. Know that cognitive therapy sessions are an important part of a treatment plan. If the patient has other mental health issues, combined treatment can be helpful. Sessions should be frequent during the initial stages of the treatment program. This will assist the patient in identifying the issues related to the drug use and learn ways to cope and change his response to triggers.
4. Keep in mind that behavioral therapy should be included in the plan as it can assist the patient to learn new attitudes, behaviors and healthier life skills. Family therapy should be included in the plan if the individual is an adolescent or has a family.
5. Note that diet, nutrition and exercise should be evaluated and a healthy eating plan and exercise routine should be put in place to assist in detoxifying the body, replenishing and strengthening it. This has a powerful impact on the mental attitude of the patient and assists the patient in learning new healthier routines.
