Triphala Herbs

Literally meaning 'three fruits' in Sanskrit, Triphala is the name of a traditional Ayurvedic herbal remedy rooted in ancient Indian culture containing the three herbal fruits Amalaki, Haritaki and Bibhitaki. Triphala is one of the most revered herb mixtures in Ayurvedic medicine and is used to treat a wide variety of conditions.


Amalaki


Commonly known the Indian Gooseberry, Amalaki is one of the three fruits in Triphala herbs. The green fruit is one of the highest sources of vitamin C in nature and said to restore vitality; enhance red blood cell count; and strengthen teeth, hair and nails. Amalaki is often called amritphala or fruit of heaven because of its many desirable medicinal properties.








Haritaki


The fruit from the herb Haritaki, also known as Chebulic myrobalan, is a key ingredient in Triphala. Sacred to the Hindu god Shiva, the herb's name means "carries away all disease." Haritaki is believed to be the best herb for the digestive system and lungs. The herb is regularly used in treatments for asthma, sore throat, vomiting, eye diseases and heart diseases. It is said to originate from an immortal drop of nectar that fell from heaven.


Bibhitaki


The third fruit in the Triphala herb is Bibhitaki, whose name means "one who keeps you away from disease". Commonly found in Indian forests, the small brownish fruit is said to nourish the throat, lungs, eyes and hair. Bibhitaki is a rejuvenative, a laxative and an astringent.


A Power Blend


When combined correctly, the three fruits that make up Triphala create a very powerful blend known as a rasayana. In Ayurvedic medicine, Triphala is highly revered and said to be able to heal any disease if used properly. Among its many beneficial effects, the rasayana is believed to rejuvenate the digestive tract, detoxify the body and prevent disease. Triphala herbs are still widely used today as alternative medicine due to their reliable and balanced healing properties.
