Lift Heavy Objects With Cataract Surgery

Lifting an object incorrectly could cause irreversible damage to your back and spine as well as excruciating pain. Trying to lift an object after you have had cataract surgery can make even the simplest tasks harder. After the cataract surgery, your eyesight is still not up to par so special care needs to be taken before moving any object. Consult your physician before engaging in any activity after your cataract surgery.

Instructions

1. Assess the object and its surroundings. If it has handles or grips, be sure to take advantage of them. Know where you are taking the item before lifting it. If the item is too heavy for you, do not try to lift it. Get another person to help. It is better to be safe than risk injury.

2. Before moving the item, plan out the path you are going to take to get the item from point A to point B. Take this time to move any obstacles out of your way and clear the path if necessary.

3. Stand close to the item that you are going to lift. Center yourself in the middle of the object and place your feet shoulder width apart.

4. While keeping your back straight, bend at the knees and squat down to grab the object. Have a good grasp of the item before trying to lift it. Breathe out as you lift. Holding your breath while lifting creates abdominal pressure which can cause serious injury to yourself.

5. While grasping the item, stand up. Keep the item close to your body while keeping your back straight. Pivot your feet, don't twist. When lifting an object turn your feet, not your back.

6. Walk slowly with your head straight, minding where you step. Once you have reached your destination, bend your knees and set the item down.
