Criteria For Lap Band Surgery

Weight loss surgery may be the last option for the severely obese to achieve weight loss and improved health. Lap band surgery is a serious medical procedure and there are strict eligibly requirements. You, your family and your health care provider can determine if it's the right choice for you.


BMI


You have a BMI of 40 or above which puts you in the morbidly obese category, or if you're more than 100 pounds overweight.


Health








Obesity is affecting your health and you have at least one of the following problems related to obesity: heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea or metabolic syndrome with an accompanying BMI of 35 or above.


Unsuccessful


You have been overweight or obese for at least the last five years, have previously tried and been unsuccessful at weight loss through diet and exercise.


Risk


You understand the risks associated with lap band surgery such as migration, slippage or erosion of the band and occasional failures.


Prerequisite








You'll be required to follow a pre-op diet plan for two weeks prior to the surgery to help your body prepare for the surgery ahead and aid recovery. The calorie allowance will range from 800-1200 calories per day and the diet should be high in protein and low in carbohydrates and fat.


Commitment


You have to commit to lifelong medical follow-ups, healthy eating and regular exercise in order to lose weight and keep it off.
