Autism affects individuals differently. At one end of the autism spectrum is classic autism, which is the most severe. However, even those with classic autism have varying degrees of the severity of their symptoms. Autism is a brain disorder primarily characterized by language and social interaction barriers. Adults affected by autism may display the following symptoms.
Language Barriers
The most severely affected adult may not be able to verbalize anything at all. However, for those that do have language skills, often their speech is robotic and rehearsed. They may have difficulty starting and continuing conversations. Also, they will probably have trouble comprehending intended humor and figures of speech.
Social Interaction Difficulties
Adults with autism may not be able to discern the body language of those around them. Also, they may not maintain appropriate eye contact when interacting with others. Many autistic adults prefer to spend time alone because of these deficiencies in social interaction.
Strict Adherence to Routine
Adults with autism will generally have a set routine and become agitated if that routine is disrupted. If a planned disruption is announced, they are more likely to be accepting of the change.
Limited Interests
Adults with autism may have limited interests. Often they become obsessed with a certain subject for a long period of time. Some may be only interested in computers or a specific TV show, for example.
Savant Gifts
Approximately 10 percent of autistic adults have some type of savant ability. Some may have natural musical abilities and others may have a fascination with dates.
