Neurontin Identification
Neurontin is another name for gabapentin. This medication, which was originally developed as a treatment for epilepsy, has now also been used for pain management, especially pain that is neuropathic (i.e., as a result of nerve damage). It can also be used, along with flumazenil, in the treatment of cocaine and amphetamine addiction. There are also reports that it can be used recreationally, as it does act on neurotransmitters in the brain and is capable of producing a mild high.
Effects on Rat Sperm Count
The effects of Neurontin, as well as other drugs that work via a similar mechanism, have been studied with regard to their ability to affect sperm count in rats. When compared with rats that had not received Neurontin, rats receiving the medication had lower weight of the testes, epididymus, vas deferens and other parts of the male reproductive system. They were also found to have a significantly lower sperm count. This may be as a result of lower production of testosterone and other male sex hormones in rats that received Neurontin.
Effects on Humans
While there have not been any clinical studies on the effects of Neurontin on human sperm, the research that has been done on rats suggests that Neurontin can lower sperm count by lowering the production of certain hormones. If you are taking Neurontin and are concerned about fertility, you should see a fertility expert. Make sure you let your doctor know that you are taking Neurontin and have him check your naturally occurring levels of hormones. Fortunately, since sperm are continuously generated by the male body, any effects of Neurontin on sperm count are reversible.
