Chiropractors use a wide range of techniques, including the commonly known spinal adjustment.
Chiropractors are focused on the human spine and its relation to the rest of the body. Your spine is one of the most important parts of your body, and practicing chiropractors are charged with caring for spines as well as promoting wellness through their work.
To become a fully-qualified chiropractor in Australia, you must first undergo five years of studying for a chiropractic degree before you can start applying for chiropractic roles.
Instructions
1. Research the three university courses offered. In Australia, only three institutions offer chiropractic degrees: RMIT University in Melbourne, The Macquarie University Sydney, and Murdoch University in Perth.
Study all aspects of the course, in particular the breakdown between undergraduate and post-graduate qualifications. RMIT and Murdoch run five-year combined courses, while Macquarie splits its requirements into a two to three-year Bachelor's degree followed by two years of post-graduate study.
Examine each individual course and the institution's reputation to assess your career prospects in the context of each course.
2. Apply for your chosen course. Once you have decided which institution you wish to attend, fill in the application form. This involves answering long essay questions and supplying the university with two references. Take time when answering the essay question, as this forms a large part of the selection criteria. Select two references that know you in different contexts.
3. Complete your five-year chiropractic degree course. During breaks in University terms, it is prudent to apply for internships. Doing work experience or internships, regardless of whether they are paid, looks excellent on your resume and will help when you are applying for jobs. If you impress during your placement ,you might receive an employment offer from the practice.
4. Become a member of a chiropractic group such as the Chiropractors' Association of Australia. Membership with one of these groups helps improve your ability as a chiropractor by keeping you abreast of the latest techniques and offering networking with other practicing chiropractors. It also helps to safeguard and develop the future of the chiropractic profession. Membership with a chiropractic group also gives you increased levels of insurance.
5. Apply for positions in the chiropractic field. Search for job vacancies at chiropractor practices and hospitals. When interviewing for roles, be sure to emphasize your key skills, including the best lessons you have learned during your university study, any work placements or internships you may have carried out and detail your membership with a chiropractic group.
