Teenagers are known for pushing boundaries and behaving erratically. But if you suspect you child has a drinking problem, you need to look at such behaviors through a different perspective. Try to talk with your child non-judgmentally if you think something is wrong, or find a counselor or other trusted adult your child will feel comfortable opening up to.
Mood Swings
Mood swings may not just be typical teen behavior---alcoholism can wreak havoc on their emotions.
Peer Group
Your teen may start hanging out with a different crowd of friends than he used to.
Smell
Smelling alcohol on her breath or clothing shows that the teen has either been drinking or around liquor.
Withdrawal
Teens can isolate themselves by staying in their rooms or otherwise avoiding contact with their family.
Abuse
A child that is becoming verbally or physically abusive for no apparent reason could be struggling with alcoholism.
Acting Out
Lying, stealing, disregarding rules and ignoring curfews are acting-out behaviors that can indicate a substance-abuse issue.
