Alendronate sodium, or Fosamax at is sometimes called, is a drug that those who have brittle bones. There are many side effects to alendronate sodium for both men and women. There is also a very specific way to take alendronate sodium as well as important side effects to note.

Alendronate sodium is a medicine that can help to strengthen the bones in a body. It has Vitamin D that absorbs calcium, which is needed to make bones strong. Alendronate sodium is most commonly taken by men and women who suffer from osteoporosis. Alendronate sodium is sometimes used to fight Paget's disease, which is a bone disease.


Fosamax


Fosamax is the brand name of the most popular alendronate sodium. It is such a popular brand that many people actually refer to alendronate sodium as Fosamax. Possible side effects are the same as alendronate sodium and it is advised that Fosamax not be used by those who have an esophagus disorder, can not stand or sit up for 30 minutes, kidney disease or a low amount of blood calcium.


Side Effects








Alendronate sodium can have many side effects and some of them differ in men and women. The most common side effect for women is abdominal pain. Others include pain in muscle, bone or joint, nausea, dyspepia, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, headache, acid regurgitation, esophageal ulcer, vomiting, dysphagia, abdominal distention, gastritis and taste perversion. For men the most common side effect of alendronate sodium is acid regurgitation. Other side effects are flatulence, dyspepsia, abdominal, nausea, diarrhea and gastroesophageal reflux disease.


Overdose side effects


Alendronate sodium is most dangerous when an overdose occurs. The side effects that come from an overdose of alendronate sodium are heartburn, inflammation of the esophagus or stomach, ulcers or an upset stomach. Contact your doctor if you suffer from any of this problems.


Warning


There are very specific conditions that must be followed for alendronate sodium to be affective and harmless. Alendronate sodium should be taken first thing in the morning with only a glass of water. After taking alendronate sodium you should not eat or drink anything for at least 30 minutes, and that includes taking other medications. You should not lie down after taking alendronate sodium, and if you are not able to sit up or stand up, contact your doctor.
