Wheelchair cushions are available by physician's order or over-the-counter and are made from different materials such as foam, gel, urethane honeycomb or air-filled chambers. Thickness, firmness and type of cushion depends on your needs. The pressure created from sitting for long periods of time can break down the skin and lead to complications such as pressure sores. A wheelchair cushion can relieve some of this pressure and assist with posture. Measuring a person for a wheelchair cushion depends on whether it is a replacement cushion or if the cushion is purchased separately from a new wheelchair.
Instructions
Measuring for a Replacement Cushion
1. Measure the inside width of the wheelchair seat in inches. Don't measure from one arm of the wheelchair to the other arm. Measure the portion of the seat between the arms.
2. Measure the depth of the wheelchair seat in inches from the back of the seat to the front of the seat.
3. Determine the correct thickness needed for the wheelchair cushion based on your pressure-release needs. Adjust the height of your seat and the footrests based on the thickness of the cushion when it is compressed. Many wheelchairs are adjustable.
Measuring for a New Cushion
4. Measure between the widest portion of your hips or thighs while sitting. Sit on the tape measure while measuring if someone is unable to help you with this task.
5. Add 1 inch to the width measurement to allow for movement.
6. Determine the seat depth by measuring from the rear of your buttocks to the back of your knees while sitting.
7. Subtract 1 inch from the depth measurement if you have a manual or power wheelchair. If you use your feet to maneuver the wheelchair, subtract 2 inches from this measurement so your calves don't rub against the cushion with each movement.
