Carcinomatous meningitis is a type of cancer that affects the spinal cord and can cause nervous system problems. This cancer comes from other types of cancer spreading to the nervous system and is detected by an MRI.
Cerebrospinal Fluid
Carcinomatous meningitis can cause an increase in cerebrospinal fluid, which can lead to vomiting and headaches.
Cranial Nerves
Sometimes the cranial nerves can become affected. If this occurs patients can develop vision problems, numbness and tingling, vertigo and difficulty speaking and eating.
Spinal Cord
As this condition progresses the spinal cord is eventually affected. This can lead to numbness and tingling of the arms and legs.
Other Symptoms
Other symptoms that can occur with carcinomatous meningitis include loss of balance and urinary problems.
Mental Symptoms
Carcinomateous meningitis can cause a decrease in mental functioning, confusion, a pressure sensation in the brain and memory loss.
