Self Help For Mild Depression

There are different degrees of depression, and treatment often depends on the severity of your condition. In moderate to severe cases, prescription medications such as antidepressants or anti-anxiety drugs may prove beneficial. But in mild cases of depression, it's possible to relieve symptoms with home and natural remedies.

Balance Brain Chemicals With Exercise

Brain chemicals play in role in determining your mood or level of happiness. People with a short supply of endorphins, serotonin and dopamine are prone to depression. Yet, you can easily combat mild depression by increasing the production of these chemicals.

Physical activity through movement or exercise is a proven way to fight depression and improve your mood. You don't have to engage in strenuous workouts or spend hours at the gym. Simple exercises such as walking, jogging, biking, swimming or aerobics stimulate the production of serotonin and dopamine and naturally elevate your mood. See if you can incorporate 30 to 60 minutes of exercise into your daily routine at least three times a week.

Consider Supplements For the Treatment of Depression

In conjunction with exercise to increase pleasure hormones, consider the benefits of vitamin supplements. Various supplements are known to increase happiness and reduce depression and anxiety. Talk with a doctor or pharmacist for recommendations--especially if you're already taking a prescription medication. Supplements may reduce the effectiveness of certain medications.

Supplements to help relieve mild depression include vitamin B12, Sam-E, omega-3, St. Johns wort, valerian, ginseng and selenium. Experiment with these natural remedies to see if your symptoms improve or disappear. Take supplements as directed.

Don't Keep Yourself Isolated

Isolation or seclusion can worsen depression and gradually lead to major depression. Rather than avoid friends and family, develop healthy social relationships and spend time with loved ones. If you're feeling down or upset, express your thoughts and allow others to assist or help you.

You can also ease mild depression by getting out of the house and spending time outdoors. Sunlight is an effective remedy for seasonal depression or the winter blues. Choose outdoor activities such as playing sports or yard work, or invest in a light box.

Limit Drugs and Alcohol

Some people mistakenly turn to drugs or alcohol to cope with depression. Granted, they may provide a temporary euphoric feeling. But instead of helping the problem, drugs and alcohol can intensify bad feelings and trigger major depression. Fight the urge to indulge in alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs in order to mask pain or induce pleasure.
