Retirement Home Vs Nursing Home

While nursing homes and retirement homes are both designed to offer senior living arrangements, they couldn't be more different in their approach and purposes. Nursing homes offer 24-hour medical care and some patients may only be there temporarily for rehabilitation. Retirement homes offer limited or no medical care, and place an emphasis on individual privacy.

Independence

Individuals living in a nursing home are under 24-hour supervision and are unable to care for themselves. Nurses are available at all times to administer medication and monitor health.

Senior citizens living in a retirement home are able to care for themselves, and are able to bathe, dress, groom and prepare their food by themselves. Individuals in these facilities can come and go as they please, don't have to answer to anyone, and participate in a variety of social activities.

Medical Care

Nursing homes have specific equipment to take on patients and care for them when they are not physically or mentally able to care for themselves. Most nursing home patients require help with at least three or more daily tasks, such as eating, being pushed in wheelchairs, walking or regular medical tests.

Individuals that live in retirement homes are in good physical and mental health, and don't require constant medical attention.

Privacy

Because nursing homes are set up like hospitals, to meet state requirements, there is little to no privacy as patients are often required to share rooms.

The primary purpose of a retirement home is help retirees maintain their independence in a secure atmosphere. The facilities at retirement homes are designed for residents to live their lives privately and be self-sufficient.

Luxury

Because most nursing homes are run by the state, they are subject to cuts in funding and have limited resources. Many of the facilities do not get the care and upkeep they need and can be subject to sanitation issues.

Retirement homes offer clients quality and comfortable apartments that can often be luxurious. In some complexes maid service and meals can be provided.

Perception

In nursing homes, individuals are viewed as patients and not as clients. The sole purpose for a patient in a nursing home is to get well and go home, or for someone gravely ill to live out her last days in comfort. Anyone who belongs in a retirement home would be miserable in a nursing home.

Retirement home candidates make autonomous decisions and live their life to the fullest by enjoying social activities with other residents or with friends and family.
