Gout is a disease characterized by high levels of uric acid in the patient's blood stream. When provided with proper treatment, people suffering from gout can manage the symptoms of this condition and live productive lives. A number of prescription and over the counter (OTC) treatments are available for this purpose.
Ibuprofen
Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that can be purchased over the counter. This medication offers temporary relief from the pain, swelling and inflammation caused by gout. It also decreases joint stiffness. Smaller doses of this medication can be used to help prevent recurrent attacks. Ibuprofen is available in a capsule, tablet or liquid form.
Aleve
Aleve (Naproxen) is a popular medication that can also be purchased over the counter, although higher dosages require a doctor's prescription. This is another analgesic and anti-inflammatory drug. It works by lowering the levels of prostaglandins in the bloodstream. Prostaglandins are hormones that dilate the blood vessels and produce the inflammation and pain associated with gout.
Diclofenac
Marketed as Cataflam, Rhumalgan or Voltaren, Diclofenac is an anti-inflammatory drug that helps relieve swelling and stiffness of the joints. This drug is also an analgesic that helps to reduce the pain caused by this condition. In the United States and the United Kingdom, Diclofenac is supplied in the form of either sodium or potassium salt (see Resources). It comes in different formulations, including tablets, suppositories and injections.
Herbal Supplements
Pharmacies and health food stores offer a number of herbal supplements may be purchased over-the-counter to treat gout. These include devil's claw, turmeric yucca and stinging nettle. They offer a natural alternative to commercial pharmaceuticals, which often have adverse side effects. However, herbal dietary supplements should only be used to treat gout with your doctor's or other health care professional's approval.
Warning
While aspirin is another OTC medication that can be used to treat gout, it is no longer recommended because over time, it can worsen this condition. Aspirin increases uric acid levels in blood, even when it is taken in low doses. Taking aspirin also causes a reduction of vasodilation.
