A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted. Strokes can cause irreversible brain damage and even death. Stroke is the No. 2 cause of deaths worldwide. Risk factors include advanced age, high blood pressure, diabetes, previous stroke, smoking and high cholesterol.
Warning
Call 911 immediately and don't ignore signs of a stroke. Get medical help to try to prevent or reduce the damage caused by a stroke.
Numbness
Sudden numbness, or even weakness of one side of the body may be a sign of a stroke. This also includes numbness of the face, arm or leg.
Confusion
People experiencing a stroke may become quickly confused or lose consciousness. Memory loss is also a sign of a stroke.
Speech
Stroke should be suspected if speech becomes difficult or if the patient can't understand others.
Vision
Sudden blurred vision, difficulty seeing and dimness are signs of a stroke.
Balance
Suspect a stroke if the person has difficulty staying balanced, can't walk or is dizzy. Loss of coordination is another sign of stroke.
