Autism is a brain disorder that usually becomes detectable around the age of three. Children with mild autism generally have average to above-average IQ's. Mild autism is sometimes referred to as Asperger's Syndrome.
Impaired Social Skills
Children with mild autism may have difficulty starting and continuing a conversation, and can have difficulty maintaining eye contact.
Obsessions
Children with mild autism may have a favorite toy or favorite hobby and may not want to do anything that does not center around those favorites. The child may also talk incessantly about these obsessions.
Emotional Concerns
Mild autism sufferers may have mood swings, even at an early age. They may also get easily agitated when their routine is disrupted.
Repetitive Speech
Children with mild autism may repeat something said to them or may repeat parts of a story book or TV show. These children may have above-average memorization skills.
Impaired Motor Skills
The child with mild autism may have poor motor skills. For example, they may have difficulty catching a ball, and the learning of handwriting may be delayed.
Sensory Issues
Some children may have sensory issues. They may be bothered by bright lights, loud noises or even the texture of certain foods.
