Facts On Doctors

Facts on Doctors

When the pain gets to be too much and the home remedies aren't working, people go to the doctor. Though most try to avoid them at all costs, doctors keep people healthy and help those who are sick. Most doctors even take an oath stating they will do no harm. The necessity of doctors in society makes the profession a lucrative career choice.

Types

The term "doctor " is an honorary title of respect bestowed on a learned individual in a certain field of expertise but is commonly used to refer to a medical practitioner, such as a family physician or a surgeon.

History

Hippocrates, a physician in ancient Greece whose legacy is the doctor's Hippocratic Oath to do no deliberate harm, rejected superstitious remedies and dealt strictly with environmental factors when treating a patient's illness.

Misconceptions

There is no one standard form of the Hippocratic Oath and doctors do not have to take to take the oath to become licensed.

Time Frame

Before becoming fully registered as a medical doctor, a student will go through about 10 years of training, including undergraduate or pre-medical school, medical school and an internship.

Features

Medical doctors, both in private practice and under government-run medical systems, are generally more compensated for their work than their peers in other doctoral professions.

Considerations

Many physicians and physicians organizations are lobbied heavily by the pharmaceutical industry in the hopes that their drug will be prescribed on an ongoing basis to the doctor's patients.

Prevention/Solution

Patient advocate organizations advise that it is necessary to be a "bad patient " with your doctor, continually asking questions and if you are not satisfied, to seek a second opinion from another doctor.
