Negative Psychological Effects Of Plastic Surgery

For many, plastic surgery can be a blessing. It can refine a physical trait that they feel holds them back from feeling complete and confident. At the same time, plastic surgery is a drastic measure, and it is also imperfect. Patients with unrealistic expectations about the transformation they will undergo could be in for a major disappointment. Those interested in plastic surgery should prepare themselves for the possible psychological as well as the physical effects of plastic surgery.

Disappointment

Many plastic surgery patients make the mistake of thinking that plastic surgery will completely change how they look. Those who expect to become supermodels overnight are often let down by even a good result, because it's not what they imagined. It is important to have realistic expectations for what surgery can do.

Depression

In the worst cases, patients' unrealistic expectations can cause them to slip into depression during their recovery period. The unattractive bruising and swelling that often accompanies plastic surgery can worsen this effect, because patients often look much worse before they look better.

Underlying Conditions

Plastic surgery is not the best solution for everyone. Individuals who may already be suffering from depression, anxiety, or body dysmorphic disorder, should seek the help of a psychologist before going under the knife. For these patients, plastic surgery can not solve the larger underlying issue.

Regret

Many patients do not prepare themselves for the permanency of plastic surgery. When they do not like a result, they may feel massive regret or guilt for having taking such permanent measures.

Anger

Some unsatisfied plastic surgery patients may feel anger toward their surgeon for "botching" their procedure. Unfortunately, plastic surgery is an art form, and patients need to be prepared that not all results will be to plan.
