Supplements For Irritable Bowel Syndrome & Bloating

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional bowel disease that is treated mainly by diet and stress management. One of the most common symptoms of IBS is bloating. It accompanies both constipation and diarrhea. Several over-the-counter supplements aid with IBS and bloating. Some are food- or herb-based, and others are man-made.

Bloating

People with IBS often produce gas as a result of their intestinal dysfunction. When food particles aren't fully broken down by the time they reach the intestines, the body produces bacteria and enzymes to further try to break them down.

This results in excess gas. Often the gas doesn't just pass through the system. This causes bloating.

Natural Supplements

Many natural supplements can be used to reduce bloating. A common choice is enteric-coated peppermint. It increases gastric juices that help break down foods, resulting in less partially digested particles reaching the intestines. This reduces excess gas production. It also stimulates gallbladder function, which is critical in digesting fats.

Probiotics, which are bacteria, aid in digestion. They help reduce excess gas as well.

Soluble fiber supplements can reduce both constipation and diarrhea. This will also result in less bloating.

Enzyme products, including Beano, basically deflate excess gas in the system. This greatly reduces the discomfort of bloating.

Other Supplements

There are many man-made products for reducing not only gas, but also constipation and diarrhea.

Immodium slows stool transit time through the intestines, which allows it to absorb more water and reduce gas production.

Simethicone, which is in products like Gas-X, works in a similar way to Beano. They reduce gas internally.

Antacids reduce bloating caused by IBS as well.

Preventing gas build-up and bloating is best; taking a supplement before or with meals can prevent an uncomfortable build-up of gas from occurring.
