Correct Way To Walk With A Cane

Walking canes are available in a wide variety of styles and sizes.

Using a cane helps to stabilize and support you while you walk. You can find canes with a single tip or four tips at the end. If you need your cane simply for balance as you walk, a single-tipped cane is often enough. Quad-tipped canes are more stable if you need to place any weight on the cane in addition to using it for balance. Whether you need your cane temporarily or permanently, walking correctly with your cane is essential to learn. Incorrect walking patterns tire you out more quickly and counteract the positive effects the cane provides.

Instructions

1. Grip the cane in whichever hand you prefer. Depending on your injury or purpose for using a cane, your doctor may recommend a particular walking pattern.

2. Move your cane when you step forward with the opposite leg. If the cane is in your right hand, move it forward when you step forward with your left leg.

3. Leave the cane in place when you step forward with the other leg.
