Silent reflux is similar to acid reflux and often confused with the condition. With silent reflux, the stomach acid enters into the esophagus and then flows back to the stomach. It can affect the esophagus as well as the larynx. According to Ohio State University Medical Center, several symptoms are common with silent reflux.
Hoarseness
The stomach acid can affect the larynx, which can result in hoarseness or voice changes.
Coughing and Choking
As the stomach acid rises in the esophagus and into the back of the throat, a sufferer may cough or have a choking sensation.
Difficulty Swallowing
As the acid irritates the lining of the esophagus and throat, swallowing may become more difficult and painful.
Bad Taste in Mouth
Regurgitation of the stomach acids can result in a bad or bitter taste in the mouth. Most patients also have bad breath.
Sinus Issues
Many patients who suffer from reflux will also have frequent sinus infections as postnasal drip is a common symptom.
Heartburn
While heartburn is more common in acid reflux patients, it can also be present in those who suffer from silent reflux as well.
