According to San Diego State University's ROHAN Academic Computing, computer-assisted speech perception testing and training at the sentence-level (CASPERSENT) is "designed for the evaluation of auditory, visual and auditory-visual speech perception performance at the sentence level." It is an experimental approach, funded by the US Department of Education, to test sentence comprehension among adults with acquired hearing loss and to find out if sentence perception can be improved with computer-assisted training.








Self-Scoring


In the self-scoring assessment, a subject is shown a person speaking a sentence. The subject repeats a sentence and then clicks a button to reveal the text of the sentence. The subject then clicks on the button to indicates the words that were correctly repeated.


Other-Assisted


In other-assisted assessments, a subject repeats a sentence and the helper (frequently a clinician) then reviews and scores the text. The text is then shown to the subject with the missed words omitted and given another try at the sentence.








Purpose


According to ROHAN, the purpose of these tests is to provide a way of assessing word recognition in normal conversation. It can show, among other things, holes or flaws in comprehension abilities. The hope is that, over time, this training will improve comprehension.

4. Pour the detox herbal tea through a fine mesh sieve, allowing the liquid to fall into a separate clean mug or heat proof container. Discard the spent herbs in the compost pile or garbage bin. Serve immediately while warm.

Exercise For Back Pain Due To Adhesions

Back pain can result from sitting at a desk for hours or from sports injuries. Adhesions, where the muscle fibers stick together and clump, can contribute to back pain by limiting normal movement.

Use a Foam Roller for Exercises


Upper back pain is a very common complaint from office workers who may unintentionally slouch in front of their computers.


Use a long foam roller to do easy exercises to break up the adhesions of muscles on the upper back to alleviate back pain in that area.


Place a 5-foot-long foam roller on the floor. Lie directly on top with your entire spine centered on the roller. Engage the abdominal muscles and set your feet flat on the floor with the knees bent.


Extend your hands overhead, with your palms touching. See if you can reach over to touch the floor behind your head. If you cannot, extend as far as you are able. Repeat 10 times. Rest.


Use a Swiss Ball to Reduce Adhesions


Using a Swiss ball applies pressure to the muscles that have clumped and helps the adhesions to dissolve. Take a medium-size Swiss ball and place it on a wall at the level of your upper back. Stand with your back against it.


Bend your knees to a 90-degree angle and lower your hips so that it appears you are sitting in an "invisible chair." Stand, rolling the Swiss ball up the wall until your legs are straight. Repeat 10 times. Rest.


Each of these exercises moves the muscles or presses them against a foam roller or Swiss ball to separate muscles that stick to form adhesions.


To see results, repeat these exercises at least three times a week for six to eight weeks.

4. Whiten your teeth by up to 10 shades in one 60- to 90-minute session with a potent, light-activated bleaching formula of 35 percent hydrogen peroxide. Cost: $500 to $1,100.


5. Consider porcelain veneers or bonding if you have conditions where bleaching isn't effective, such as tetracycline or intrinsic staining. Bonding is a resin that's contoured over teeth. Veneers are thin porcelain manufactured in a laboratory. Cost: $500 to $1,500 per tooth for porcelain veneers, $150 to $300 for bonding.


6. Keep in mind that two to three weeks of whitening by over-the-counter products equals one week of overnight tray treatment from the dentist--and may well equal one hour of the light-activated treatments.

Jonathon Langdon Down was the first physician to identify Down Syndrome, which causes mild to severe mental and physical impairments. It is a genetic condition caused when cells in a embryo divide improperly and create a third chromosome in the 21st pair. Down Syndrome is also called Trisomy 21. It appears in one out of every 800 live births.


Types


Down Syndrome can either be complete, meaning every 21st chromosome in the body has an extra chromosome, or it can be mosaic, where only some of the chromosomes have an additional chromosome in the 21st pair.


Types


The rarest type of Down Syndrome is translocation Trisomy 21 and occurs when a piece of one of the 21st chromosome attaches to another chromosome, or translocates.


Time Frame


Women under 30 have less than a one in 1,000 chance of conceiving a child with Down Syndrome, but the odds increase as women age. By 40, the ratio is one in 105 and rises all the way to one in 12 by the age of 49.


Considerations


While women with advanced maternal age (greater than 35) are more likely to conceive a baby with Down Syndrome, more babies with Down Syndrome are born to younger women, because more young women than older women have babies.








Prevention/Solution


As of 2009, there is no prevention for Down Syndrome but for women at risk from age or genetic factors, prenatal tests like chorionic villi sampling (CVS), percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS) or amniocentesis are available between 10 and 18 weeks of gestation to determine if a child has Down Syndrome.

Why Does Chemotherapy Cause Side Effects

Many people, when diagnosed with cancer, have to deal with chemotherapy treatments and the side effects that go along with such treatments. Cancer and Chemotherapy

Left untreated, cancer rapidly spreads into surrounding vital organs, and this is where chemotherapy is necessary to slow and at times stop the spread to these organs. Chemotherapy specifically attacks these rapidly multiplying cells, but it also kills other good cells, which is what causes side effects.








Chemotherapy Short-Term Effects


Chemotherapy fights cancer by destroying any and all cells that reproduce in a quick manner. Unfortunately, that includes the red and white blood cells and any and all of the other good cells we need to live. Chemotherapy is not selective in what it kills, as it does not know the difference between the good cells and the bad. Because of this, the good cells that would normally work to keep the body functioning are weakened, and this can lead to the adverse side-effects chemotherapy patients suffer. Some things that are affected in the short-term by chemo are the mucus linings of your mouth, the cells that make up the hair and all the lining and acids of the gastrointestinal tract.


Permanent Effects


There is usually no permanent cell damage from chemotherapy. After the treatments are over, the body returns to its normal state. Sometimes there is permanent damage to reproductive organs and kidneys. However, these cases are rare.

It is important to take your doses of chemotherapy as scheduled and on time to reduce the chances of permanent damage to your tissues. Knee Exercises To Relieve Pressure

Pressure on the knee can be caused by weak or tight muscles in the surrounding musculature of the leg. Tight hamstrings and quadriceps, the muscles at the back and front of the leg respectively, can cause the patella, or knee cap, to misalign in its groove, which can cause tendon pain. Doing exercises to stretch and strengthen the leg can relieve the pain caused by this issue.








Chair Leg Lift


Sit in a chair with your back firmly against the chair's support. Make sure your feet sit firmly on the ground. Slowly straighten the left leg so that the toes are pointing up towards the ceiling. Do not lock the knee as this may cause pain. Lower the leg back to the ground then lift the leg again without bending the knee at all. The knee should come up towards the ceiling. Slowly lower the leg back to the ground. Repeat this 12 times each leg for two to three sets.


Knee Dips


Stand with the back straight and the legs placed together so the knees are touching. The knees should be slightly bent. Slowly lift your left leg up toward the chest, balancing on the right leg. Lower your body down by bending the right knee in an even manner. Go down a few inches and return to the starting position without locking the knees. Do not let the knee or toes turn inward during the exercise as this will cause pressure to be applied to the knee. Do 10 dips then switch legs. Repeat for two to three sets.








Hamstring Curls


Lay on the floor so that your back is toward the ceiling. Keep your legs straight behind you with the toes propping up the foot. Place the left foot over the right ankle and begin bringing your right leg up toward the buttocks using the left leg as resistance against the stretch. You will feel the muscles in the back of your right leg above the knee engage. Hold the pressure for a count of 10, then lower the foot back toward the ground. Do 10 repetitions for each leg. As you get stronger and the pain in the knee is alleviated, add ankle weights or do the curls on a leg weight machine.

How Many People Are Born Deaf

Those who are born deaf have congenital deafness. This condition is less common than deafness caused by later life events and can be attributed to a variety of causes.


Amount


Approximately one out of every 1,000 to 2,000 babies is born deaf.


Causes


There are two main causes of deafness in infants. One is an insufficient number of hair cells, which activate the auditory nerve in the ear. The second is that the nerves are present but do not function correctly. Genetics plays a role in approximately half of all cases of congenital deafness. Illnesses the baby's mother had during pregnancy and some medications ingested during pregnancy can also cause infants to be born deaf. Congenital deafness can be caused by consumption of alcohol or drugs during pregnancy as well. Prematurely born babies are also at risk for this condition.








Statistics


Those who were born deaf account for only 10% of all cases of deafness.


Treatment


Early treatment is important for those born deaf so that they are able to develop communication skills. Hearing aids can be used to help children as young as four weeks old, but these cannot help all children born deaf. Cochlear implants are another form of treatment in which a device is surgically implanted in a child's ear. This procedure can be performed on children as young as one year old.


Symptoms


Most infants are screened for hearing problems before leaving the hospital. If birth takes place at home, it's important to have the baby examined by a doctor within the first three weeks of life. Infants who are born deaf will not respond to sound. They will also not produce language; this includes even basic nonsense sounds.


Sign Language


Sign language is an important communication tool for those with congenital deafness, especially when that deafness cannot be treated with hearing aids or a cochlear implant. Babies are young as a year old have the motor skills needed to sign.

Though the two conditions may seem unrelated, arthritis and psoriasis are both inflammatory disorders and sometimes present together. When a person has both conditions, it is known as psoriatic arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis affects millions of people and varies from mild to severe.


Psoriasis and Arthritis


It is estimated that between 10 and 30 percent of all people with psoriasis also have arthritis. When both conditions occur in the same patient, the conditions are considered to be related, as they are both caused by an inflammatory immune response. Arthritis associated with psoriasis is known as psoriatic arthritis. This is not a specific type of arthritis, but rather any type of arthritis that happens in a psoriasis sufferer.


Symptoms of Psoriatic Arthritis


Most sufferers experience psoriasis symptoms before arthritis symptoms set in; a person may begin to display psoriasis symptoms and then develop arthritis a few years later. The opposite scenario, with the arthritis beginning first, is not uncommon, however. Most people with psoriatic arthritis first show symptoms around the age of 30 to 50. Other people begin to experience it as teens or pre-teens, and in these cases it is common for the arthritis to manifest first. There are different types of psoriasis, such as plaque, guttate, pustular and nail psoriasis. The most common form is plaque psoriasis and this is the type most often associated with psoriatic arthritis. It appears as a slightly raised red area of skin covered in a silvery film or flakes of dead skin. It ranges in severity from very mild, invlolving just one or two spots at a time, to severe cases that cover much of the body. The severity of psoriasis is not necessarily indicative of the severity of the accompanying arthritis; it is possible to have mild psoriasis and rather severe arthritis and vice-versa. In many cases, psoriasis comes and goes in outbreaks. The pain of the arthritis tends to be worse during an outbreak. The pain of arthritis is a burning, sharp ache in the bones and can be quite debilitating. During a flare-up, sufferers may experience side effects such as stiffness in the affected joints, slight fever and mild to severe fatigue. Psoriatic arthritis can affect any joint in the body, depending on what type it is.








Types of Psoriatic Arthritis


There are five categories of psoriatic arthritis. Asymmetric arthritis tends to be the mildest form, usually affecting three or fewer joints on just one side of the body. Distal interphalangeal predominant arthritis (DIP) affects mainly the joints closest to the tips of the fingers and toes. Symmetric arthritis affects about half of all psoriatic arthritis sufferers and can be quite severe. It affects multiple joints on both sides of the body. Spondylitis is arthritis of the spine, and can affect any or all of the vertebrae from the sacroiliac joint to the neck. Over time, it can lead to fusing of the affected vertebrae and can impair range of movement and lung capacity. Arthritis mutilans is perhaps the most disabling type of arthritis; it destroys the small bones in the hand, resulting in significant disability and deformation.


Diagnosis


A diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis is made when psoriasis and arthritis are present together, but the psoriasis and arthritis are themselves diagnosed separately. Psoriasis can usually be diagnosed simply by sight, though occasionally a biopsy or scraping may be taken for testing, in order to rule out other possible conditions. Arthritis is usually diagnosed by X-ray, which will show areas of inflammation or deterioration. Other diagnostic tools for arthritis include sedimentation rate tests and rheumatoid factor tests. A joint fluid test is sometimes performed to rule out gout. People with the HLA-B27 gene are more likely to develop psoriatic arthritis and so a doctor will often perform a blood test to look for this gene in order to finalize a diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis.








Risk Factors


The main risk factor for psoriatic arthritis is pre-existing psoriasis. At least 10 percent of psoriasis sufferers also develop psoriatic arthritis. Family history is also a factor; many psoriatic arthritis sufferers have a genetic predisposition to it, though this is not always the case. Men and women are almost equally affected by psoriatic arthritis, but the types of arthritis affect the sexes differently; men are more likely to suffer from spondylitis and DIP, while more women suffer from symmetric arthritis.


Medical and Drug Treatment


There is no cure for psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis, but there are ways to manage the pain and slow the progression of arthritis and reduce the incidence and severity of psoriasis outbreaks. Many people with mild to moderate psoriatic arthritis find non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), such as aspirin and ibuprofen, very helpful in managing the pain and inflammation. NSAIDS are relatively mild and are available over the counter. Brand names include Aleve, Advil and Motrin. For more severe cases, prescription drugs may be necessary. Some of these include corticosteroids, TNF-alpha inhibitors and immunosuppressants. Immunosuppressants also help with psoriasis, because psoriasis, like arthritis, is an autoimmune disease. All these prescription drugs can have serious side effects, but they may nevertheless be a good choice for those who suffer from severe cases. Surgery is rarely done for psoriatic arthritis, but may be deemed necessary in extreme cases to reconstruct deformed digits or separate fused vertebrae.


Lifestyle Tips and Supplements


In addition to medications, or even in mild cases, instead of medications, there are some lifestyle tips that will benefit psoriatic arthritis sufferers. Regular, low-impact exercise is vital, as it keeps joints loose and can help alleviate pain. Walking, yoga and swimming are considered especially helpful. It is also important to maintain a healthy weight, so that arthritic joints don't have to support more weight than necessary. Cold and hot packs may help relieve painful joints, as well. Those with spondylitis need to focus on proper posture; though it may be uncomfortable to stand up straight, it is necessary in order to keep the vertebrae loose and to help prevent vertebral fusion in a stooped posture. As for psoriasis itself, many sufferers find relief from itching and flaking by taking salty baths and liberally applying lotion. Exposure to sunlight also helps break down plaques, though care must be taken in order to avoid sunburn. Salicylic acid soaps and coal-tar shampoo may help alleviate or even prevent outbreaks for some people. Some supplements may also help those with psoriasis and arthritis; glucosamine and condroitin may help keep joints from deteriorating by promoting healthy cartilage and many people find that a daily dose of fish oil helps with both the inflammation of arthritis and the severity of psoriasis.

Age, illness and injury are all sources of irritation surrounding the joint of your hip. If the irritation reaches extreme levels, the joint will become inflamed and very painful. Instructions

2. Fill a disposable coffee cup with water and freeze it. The cup should be filled to the very top edge.


3. Cut off a section of the cup from around the opening. This should make the top edge of the ice inside visible.


4. Hold the cup upside down so the ice is facing down and place it straight onto your hip.








5. Move the ice cup around your hip over the painful areas, applying light pressure. Do this for five minutes and stop. If you wish, repeat once your hip has warmed up again.


6. Lie on the hip that isn't jammed when you are going to sleep and lean forward slightly so you don't have pressure on your hips. You can use a pillow between your legs and under your stomach to help support your body in a comfortable position.

The advantage of laparoscopic surgery is that it requires less recovery time, smaller incisions and less time in the hospital.


Gastric Band








According to GastricBypass.com, another popular option for gastric bypass is the gastric band. For individuals morbidly obese, the gastric band may be a better choice than the roux-en-y procedure. This is because gastric band bypass does not restrict food consumption as dramatically. As a result, individuals are able to adjust to eating smaller portions more easily.
