Wellbutrin Dosage Side Effects

Wellbutrin is a popularly prescribed drug for mild to moderate depression, and is also prescribed for those who are trying to quit smoking. But as with most other drugs, it does have side effects that can vary from annoying to intolerable. Higher dosages often lead to a higher incidence of effects. Below are some of the more common side effects of Wellbutrin.


Headache


A common side effect of Wellbutrin is headache, at least for the first few weeks as the drug establishes itself in the body. Some also experience a headache if they forget to take the drug for a couple of days, or they try to stop taking it altogether without weaning off of it.


Seizures


Those taking a higher dose of Wellbutrin are susceptible to an increase in the possibility of having a seizure. Even those taking a lessor dose can experience seizures, as the drug affects the electrical activity of the brain. Wellbutrin is therefore not recommended for people who have epilepsy or similar disorders.


Loss of Apetite


Although not prescribed for dieters, Wellbutrin is a very efficient appetite suppressant. This effect may be the result of the drug contributing to an overall sense of well-being, so that people don't overeat. Or it could be because Wellbutrin is considered a stimulant, which puts it in a class of drugs that are known to curb the appetite.


Other Side Effects








Dry mouth is often reported, which is treatable by keeping liquids close at hand. Dizziness and drowsiness are possible as the body adjusts to the medication. Constipation is common, and other side effects include increased sweating and urination, insomnia, ringing in the ears, nausea/vomiting, nervousness, weakness and changes in taste. More severe (and less common) side effects include an allergic reaction, a fast heartbeat, chest pains, mood changes and facial swelling.


Not Meant for Children


Wellbutrin is not intended for use by children or adolescents. It has been proven that Wellbutrin reacts differently with the brain of a child, causing feelings of suicide and depression that might be worse than what the drug was prescribed for in the first place.








Weaning Off


Wellbutrin should not be stopped suddenly, or patients run the risk of encountering exaggerated side effects. It is recommended that patients wean off of Wellbutrin by slowly lowering the dose of the medication. Completely weaning off of Wellbutrin can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months, depending on the initial dose prescribed and how the person reacts to lowering the dose.

The History Of The Cardioverter Defibrillator







Once a major procedure, ICD implantation now takes only two to three hours.


Ventricular fibrillation is the irregular contraction of the heart's lower chambers. This erratic rhythm prevents the heart from pumping blood to the body. Its most common cause is myocardial infarction, or heart attack, and death follows soon after if no action is taken. Before the invention of the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), more than 40 percent of those suffering ventricular fibrillation died. After it's invention, that rate decreased to two percent.


The Electric Beginning


Defibrillation administers electricity to the heart to shock it back into normal rhythm. The discovery of this characteristic of electricity was somewhat accidental. In the early 1900's, while investigating electrocution deaths after General Electric switched from direct current (dc) to alternating current (ac), electrical engineering professors at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland used ac shocks to kill stray dogs. In the process, they observed that a second shock could bring the dead dog back to life.


Early Days


Claude Beck, a cardiac surgeon at University Hospitals of Cleveland, continued animal experimentation, using ac electricity directly on the open hearts of animals he had put into ventricular fibrillation. When, by chance, in 1947, a 14-year-old boy's heart stopped during surgery, Beck called for his research tools to be brought into the operating room. After two shocks, using metal spoons with wooden handles as paddles to deliver the electricity, he succeeded in restarting the boy's heart. Scientists in Europe and the Soviet Union continued to refine the process, using dc defibrillation, then a biphasic waveform (a larger positive shock followed by a smaller negative one).


Michel Mirowski


In 1966, when a friend and mentor of Israeli cardiologist Michel Mirowski died from ventricular fibrillation, the seeds of invention were sown in grief. Why wasn't there a way to prevent this malignant fibrillation, or a way to convert it to normal rhythm when it happened? Implantable pacemakers had recently become available; Mirowski wanted to make a defibrillator also small enough to be implanted into the body so that a person could be shocked out of ventricular fibrillation without having to be in a hospital. The medical community scoffed at the idea. After all, the machines used in hospitals weighed 30 to 40 pounds, used large paddles to deliver the jolts and took two people to operate.


Success


Unable to accomplish the task he set for himself in Israel, Mirowski emigrated to the United States and in 1969 began working at Johns Hopkins University with Dr. Morton Mower. Their work met with skepticism from all corners. Nevertheless, Mirowski and Mower continued their research and in the mid-1970's a series of long-term tests of the device in dogs showed its viability. In 1980, following extensive investigation and review, the first defibrillator was implanted into a human. Soon the bulky paddles of early defibrillators were gone, replaced by adhesive pads, and a modern biphasic waveform required less power, allowing the defibrillator's components to become smaller.


Vindication


In 1985, after 800 human implantations, the device was approved by the Food and Drug Administration, and by 1990, when Mirowski died, his implantable cardioverter defibrillator had saved the lives of 10,000 people. Today, the ICD is a fraction of its 1980's size. Despite this, it lasts longer and does much more. It has prolonged the lives of hundreds of thousands of people with irregular heart rhythms, a great many of whom would surely have suffered sudden cardiac death without it.

How Do Wheelchair Lifts Work







Wheelchair lifts help people with disabilities move from one floor to another, or get into and out of a vehicle. Lifts can be electric or hydraulic. There are wheelchair lifts for stairs and wheelchair lifts for vehicles. There are also wheelchair lifts integrated into wheelchairs so that a user can get out of the wheelchair with ease.


Stairs


When a stair lift is installed, the dimensions of the staircase are assessed to determine if the staircase is wide enough for a chairlift operation. If not, the staircase will need to be widened. The weight of the chair, as well as the weight of the wheelchair user, must be added together to ensure that the lift will be able to carry the chair and the user. The device operates off dual motors, with a backup battery.


A wheelchair lift used inside the home is attached to the stairwell and incorporated into the household structure. The stair wheelchair lift is a platform lift attached to heavy-duty tracks. The tracks are connected to the side of the staircase. The platform is a square, flat structure identified as the lift cab. The lift cab is manufactured with dimensions at least 4.5 feet wide or more, ensuring that it is big enough for a wheelchair to fit on the platform.


Some stair wheelchair lifts are operated by cables and hydraulics. The hydraulic-based wheelchair lift and the platform lift operate off a motor powered by electricity. Both the platform lift and hydraulic-based lifts are fully equipped with automated brakes, as well as locks. If the lift is installed running along an inside wall, the wall may have to be renovated to add additional support. Stanchions can be used to lend additional support.


Battery

The wheelchair-user safely rolls into the vehicle, and the lift folds up so that the door can be closed.


Not all vehicle chair lifts operate while the disabled individual is in the chair. Many car wheelchair lifts allow the wheelchair to be loaded onto the wheelchair lift first, while the disabled individual transfers into the vehicle. Once inside the vehicle, the individual uses the controller to electrically lift the wheelchair into the vehicle. Vehicle-appropriate wheelchair lifts are mounted on the vehicle and have the ability to lift more than 700 pounds. The lift will rise, then fold, via an automated process. The door of the vehicle can also be closed via an automated process.


Chairlift


Some wheelchairs have built-in lifts so that an individual can be elevated in his chair; the chair will lift up the individual, making it easier to stand or to reach items that are too high for someone in a seated position. A mechanism is used to push the bottom of the chair seat upward; as the motor moves the individual in the chair forward, he or she places his or her feet firmly on the ground and waits for the chair to elevate. The elevated seat is operated by a control mechanism and provides added support for a disabled individual who needs it. These chairs are available in three different styles offering various positions: two-lift, three-lift, and infinite-lift positions.

No matter how comfortable it might feel to sleep on a soft, squishy mattress, it simply is better for you to use a firm mattress (this will also aid you in your sleep posture).








4. Have a sound mind! Concentrate on your breathing. Breathe slowly, smoothly, and steadily. Think relaxing thoughts. Your body cannot relax physically unless your mind is relaxed. If you don't have a relaxed mind, you will not be able to easily relax on your mattress, and therefore, you won't be able to fall asleep!

How Determine What My Weight Should Be

Being overweight is a predictor for risk factors in developing heart disease, diabetes and other diseases. Just hopping on the scale is not sufficient to determine whether your weight is acceptable from a health standpoint. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute recommends measuring your Body Mass Index (BMI), which is a measure of body fat relative to your height and weight.


Calculate It


MedlinePlus offers this formula to calculate your BMI. Weigh yourself and multiply your weight by 703. Convert your height into inches (multiply the number of feet tall your are by 12, then add the inches to the result). Divide the result from the first calculation by your height in inches. Divide that result by your height in inches. You now have your BMI.

Check the chart to see where the result of your calculation falls, and it will indicate if you should be concerned about your weight. You are an exception to the BMI chart if you are a bodybuilder because your BMI may be much higher as muscle weighs more than fat, you are 65 or older because a slightly higher BMI may protect you from osteoporosis or you are a child. This chart is only for adults.


Waist Circumference


The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute recommends that you check not only your BMI but also your waist circumference for a more accurate indication of your risk factors. There are no known side effects associated with the use of quassia as a head lice treatment.


Garlic and Tea Tree Oil

Mix 12 drops of garlic oil, 12 drops of tea tree oil and 1 pint of water. Apply the mixture three times and remove after the third application with a goldenseal tea rinse. Prevent Ringworm


Ringworm can infect the groin ("jock itch"), the feet (athlete's foot) and the scalp. It is easier to prevent the spread of ringworm than it is to treat it. Good hygiene may help keep ringworm from infecting you or your family.

1. Avoid contact with people or animals that have ringworm. Signs of infection include flakes of skin on the fur, excessive itching, patchiness and hair loss.

Cure A Muscle Strain

Muscle strains occur when muscle fibers are torn. Also referred to as pulled muscles or torn muscles, muscle strains can be painful and debilitating. Fortunately, muscle strains generally fully heal without too much trouble. If you have a muscle strain, there are various things you can do to expedite healing and alleviate swelling and pain. With some gentle care, you can effectively support the healing process, helping to cure your muscle strain.


Instructions


1. Ice the muscle. This will help to alleviate swelling and pain that may result from the strain. Apply ice for 15 minutes and then take it off for 15 minutes. Repeat as many times as necessary.


2. Take over-the-counter medication. Anti-inflammatory medication will reduce swelling and lessen pain. Acetaminophen is the preferable choice for muscle strains since aspirin and ibuprofen can encourage bleeding, thereby worsening the problem.


3. Rest. If you continue to fully use your strained muscle, you could cause further tearing and more-serious injury to the area. Rest the muscle as much as possible. Avoid vigorous exercise altogether until the muscle has fully healed.


4. Elevate the strained muscle. If the muscle strain is in one of your limbs, elevate the area. This reduces swelling.








5. Support the strained muscle. Wrap the muscle in an elastic bandage to provide support to the area. The bandage should be firm but not tight. If it leaves any marks on your skin, it is too tight and may be inhibiting circulation.


6. Apply heat. After 24 hours have passed from the initial injury, you can begin using heat to treat the muscle strain. Apply a heating pad to the muscle for 15-minute intervals. This will loosen the muscle, thereby aiding the healing process.








7. Massage the muscle. Use light pressure to gently rub the muscle. This encourages circulation, allowing important nutrients and blood to reach and nourish the injured muscle.

Symptoms Of Meningitis In Infants







Meningitis is a serious inflammation that affects the membrane which covers the brain and spinal cord. When this membrane, also known as the meninges, become inflamed due to bacterial or viral infection, it can be a life-threatening situation for an infant.


Identification


Identifying meningitis in infants is a little more complicated than identifying the disease in children or adults. While adults and children may complain of the prototypical symptoms of stiff neck, severe headache and chills, meningitis symptoms in babies are not as obvious. Instead, you may notice that your infant is unusually cranky or lethargic and has a fever. While these symptoms are also signs of other illnesses, when combined with other symptoms, meningitis should be a consideration. Signs to look out for include: rigidity (holding her body stiffly), especially her neck; reduced suck and swallow reflex; poor appetite; unusually high-pitched cry; and bulging of the soft spots on the baby's head.


Types


While both of the two most common types of meningitis, bacterial and viral, pose a serious risk to your infant, bacterial meningitis is much more dangerous. Without antibiotic treatment, it can often be fatal within a few days. Symptoms of bacterial meningitis come on suddenly and swiftly, while infants with viral meningitis may show symptoms of a cold, ear infection or respiratory infection prior to the onset of more severe symptoms.


Considerations


Newborns and infants are at a higher risk of contracting certain types of bacterial meningitis, not only because they are more commonly exposed to some of the bacteria, but also because they may not yet have received all the preventive immunizations. Infant meningitis is frequently attributed to Group B streptococcus infections or exposure to E.coli or listeria in milk or food products.


Prevention/Solution








There are a number of preventive measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of meningococcal infection in infants. A mother who is known to be a carrier of Group B streptococcus should be given antibiotics while in labor in order to avoid passing on the bacteria through the birth canal. Sticking to a routine schedule of immunizations can reduce an infants' risk of contracting Hib and pneumococcus, also common causes of meningitis. Additionally, parents can talk to their pediatrician about the benefits of the meningococcal meningitis vaccine.

How Does Smoking Cause Emphysema

From the very first time smokers light up, they begin to cause damage to their lungs. The longer they smoke, the more damage occurs. This damage eventually becomes irreparable, and can lead to emphysema, which is a chronic lung disease.


As the cigarette smoke is inhaled deep into the lungs, it leaves behind deposits of chemicals from the tobacco. These chemicals remain in the lung cavity and start the damaging process almost immediately.








These chemicals destroy the tiny hairlike cilia that help keep air passages clear of any mucus build up. This leads to excess mucus, causing congestion. The build up of mucus also narrows the air passageways, creating a smaller air flow.


The chemicals in the smoke attack the air sacs in the lungs as well and they lose their elasticity and shape. To visualize this, consider the difference in a fully inflated balloon versus one that has lost its air and become soft and out of shape.


When the air sacs are damaged, they have a harder time separating the oxygen from the carbon dioxide in the smoker's system. This will leave the entire body deprived of the amount of oxygen it needs to be healthy. Lack of proper oxygen leads to other organ damage.


As the condition worsens, the lungs lose their elasticity as well. This can make it very hard for the smoker to take a deep breath or to exhale the bad air properly. The lungs simply refuse to inflate or deflate properly. This causes shortness of breath because the smoker can only take very shallow breaths.








Emphysema is a chronic lung disease that has no cure. Medication and changes in lifestyle are the only resources the smoker has to get any relief. As the disease progresses, the lungs become more damaged and breathing decreases even more. Simply walking can exhaust a person suffering from emphysema.

Care For A Tooth When A Filling Falls Out

Everyone, at some point in life, has experienced the feeling of pins and needles or a tingling sensation in their foot. We call this our foot falling asleep. The medical term for a sleeping foot or arm is "transient paresthesia". It typically happens when we put pressure on a body part for an extended period of time. Instructions


1. Release the pressure. If you are sitting on your foot, take it out from underneath your body. A sleeping foot can also be caused by shoes that are too tight or are laced too tightly. In this case, remove the shoe.








2. Shake your foot gently to wake it up.


3. Massage your foot to increase circulation to the area. Take the foot in your hand and move it back and forth, flexing the ankle.


4. Get up and walk on it when the tingling sensation starts to subside. Do not try standing on your foot immediately when it falls asleep, you might find that it can not support your weight and you fall.


5. Soak your foot in warm water, or put it under the faucet in the bathtub and run warm water on it. Be sure to check the temperature of the water with your hand, or another body part first before putting your foot in to make sure it is not too hot. If your foot is still asleep it might not send appropriate signals to the brain and you could burn your foot before your brain knows to pull it back out of the hot water.

Chiropractic Therapy For Thigh Pain

If your thigh pain is acute, you must obtain an X-ray to exclude the possibility of fractured bone. Chronic muscular pain, however, may be helped by chiropractic care. The four quadriceps femoris muscles on the front of your thigh can tear or become strained by exertion; the resulting injury is a contusion or bruise. A contusion is most painful when moving the thigh. Chiropractic treatment can ease the pain and relax muscle spasms while the muscles are healing. Chiropractors can also realign the spine and hips, which may ease residual muscle pain in the legs.


Symptoms


Determine the extent of your injury. If you can't put any weight on your leg or extend it at all, you may have a fracture or tear that requires emergency care. A contusion, which may be helped by chiropractic therapy, is accompanied by swelling of the front of the thigh; the skin is red and progresses to black and blue. The thigh bruise limits the range of motion of the knee, but probably won't completely immobilize you.


Another reason to see a chiropractor is if you have thigh pain that seems to be radiating down from your lower back. In this case, the muscle tightness may be the result of your hips or spine being out of alignment and will respond to a simple adjustment.


Immediate Treatment


Immediately after an injury, apply ice to the thigh to reduce swelling; a chiropractor may do this during an office visit. Elevating the leg reduces swelling and takes pressure off of the injury. The chiropractor may recommend an ace bandage to support the leg while the muscles heal. Short-term use of crutches takes the weight off the injured muscles to give them a chance to heal and relax.


Chiropractic Approaches


The goal of the chiropractic treatment is to restore full range of motion to the knee joint, i.e. improve function and decrease pain. Chiropractic adjustment will not reduce pain associated with a thigh bruise, but chiropractors use massage, ultrasound, and electrical muscle stimulation to stretch or relax muscles that are shortened due to spasms. 1. Understand that your lungs aren't muscles and don't fill up with air on their own. You actually create a vacuum in your lungs using your diaphragm, the big muscle just below your ribcage. Take a deep breath and notice where the air goes and what muscles control it. Notice that your shoulder are not involved, so forcing them back won't do any good.








2. Grab your timer. To breathe for singing you need to be able to breathe quickly and sustain the air coming out. Take a deep breath and start the timer as you let your breath out slowly. See how long you can sustain the outflow of air. Take another deep breath, but do it in half the time as you did the first time: Do it like a gasp. Time your outflow again. After a few tries, you should be able to equalize your times.


3. Practice sustaining longer. Frank Sinatra used to hold his breath underwater as a way to practice improving his lung power. Don't go overboard, but try to hold your breath and let it out more and more slowly. Half of what you're going to overcome is mental. Once you've practiced for awhile you'll notice a dramatic increase in your sustained length.








4. Start singing notes and timing yourself. Your times with and without the voice added should be roughly the same. Note that the louder you sing the more air you'll use. But keep practicing: Even your loud notes will last longer than your quiet ones used to.


5. Practice several times a day.

Lavender, mandarin, rose, sandalwood and Roman chamomile are essential oils with calming properties. Orange, geranium, lemon, grapefruit and bergamot are used to promote happiness and peace. Basil black pepper, rosemary, cypress and peppermint are good for memory and concentration. All of these oils can be added to base blends according to individual preference. Precautions

Tinnitus is a ringing or other type of noise that begins in the ear or head that only the individual with tinnitus can hear. Nearly 36 million Americans suffer from tinnitus. However, in most cases, it is not a serious problem so much as a nuisance. Tinnitus usually resolves itself with time.


Causes


The most common cause of tinnitus is nerve damage to the hearing nerves in the inner ear. However, age, other diseases of the inner ear, such as Meniere's syndrome, and excessive exposure to loud noises, such as loud music and firearms, can also cause tinnitus. In rare cases, tinnitus can be caused by a tumor on the hearing or balance nerve.


Symptoms


If you hear ringing, swishing or other noises when no one else around you appears to, you may have tinnitus. Tinnitus can be accompanied by a loss of balance and is often associated with hearing loss. Be sure to tell your doctor if the tinnitus is constant, intermittent or pulsing, like a heartbeat, as the type of sound can distinguish between normal tinnitus or a more serious problem.


Testing


In most cases, tinnitus is not a serious condition. However, if you have persistent tinnitus, a doctor will most likely schedule a type of hearing test called an audiogram. An audiogram will usually reveal the depth and reason for the tinnitus. However, if it does not, other tests, such as the auditory brain stem response, an MRI scan or a CT scan may be given to be sure the tinnitus does not have a more serious cause.


Treatment

You might just have to learn to live with the noise. In other cases, tinnitus simply goes away. Yoga Poses For Heartburn Relief

Heartburn is a result of stomach acid breaking past the upper and lower sphincters of your esophagus. These valves keep stomach matter from drifting about and getting into your lungs through your windpipe. Hatha yoga poses will lead to relief of heartburn, if you combine them with some basic practices of Ayurveda (Yoga's sister science). The goal of Ayurveda and Yoga is to aid your body through balance.


Ayurvedic Eating


The process of sitting properly and chewing thoroughly will contribute to your digestion and lesson the potential for heartburn, as your stomach will have to work less to get the food ready to pass to the small intestine. Sit with a long spine--do not slouch--and chew your food until it is nearly liquid. Do not drink cold liquids with your meal, and drink any liquid sparingly.


Lie on Your Left Side


When you have finished your meal, lie on your left side and rest. This will allow your food to occupy the chamber of your stomach. Twenty minutes is ideal, but if you are short on time, lean to the left for as long as you can while sitting, it will be helpful. Breathe deeply; long, balanced yogic breathing will allow your body to relax so it can fully engage in digestion.


Yoga after the meal in hopes of aiding digestion is not recommended by Ayurveda. Your body digests food best when it is relaxed. Stress contributes to your body's inability to digest, so relaxation after the meal is essential to avoid heartburn.


The time to do yoga to assist your digestion is before you eat. Sit quietly and breathe deeply. Begin by stretching your arms over your head. Hold each movement until you feel the sweet release of relaxation. Roll your shoulders. Stand in mountain pose and take three deep breaths. Bend forward with your back flat. Do not roll your back and shoulders to get your hands closer to your feet. Stop the bend as soon as you feel limited.


The more relaxed you are before your meal, the less likely you are to experience heartburn.


What and How You Eat








Your body likes to digest some foods alone. When these foods have other types of food with them, the alkaline or acid needed to break down one food can conflict with the other and the contents of your stomach will not easily move into your small intestine. Gasses then develop and carry vile liquid up your esophagus to give you heartburn.


*Fruit should be eaten alone.


*Starch is not compatible with the digestion of protein. Steak and potatoes can cause serious trouble.


*Alcoholic beverages do not aid digestion.


*There should be at least two hours between your last meal of the day and going to sleep.


*Meals at night should be light--the lighter the better.


The role of yoga in aiding digestion is one of relaxation. When your daily stress is eased, your meals will be digested readily and heartburn will become a thing of the past.

In terms of therapeutic therapy, there's an endless debate over whether the wet heat of a steam shower or the dry heat of a sauna is more beneficial for relaxation and health. Not surprisingly, both have their benefits and drawbacks.


Cost


Steam showers have a slight edge, with prices starting at just under $1,000; costs for a sauna start at $1,500.

Maintenance


Saunas will need to be swept only when necessary, whereas steam showers require a weekly spray down with a tile cleaner.
