Determine The Shelf Life Of Foods

When you get around to cleaning the cobwebs out of your pantry and

wiping the mystery spills from your refrigerator, you're bound to come

across some scary science projects. To determine what's perfectly fine

and what's petrified, follow this guide.

Instructions

1. Remember that not all foods are created equal: Depending on the quality of the food when you purchased it, and how it has been stored (temperature, packaging), foods may deteriorate more quickly or last longer.

2. Know your terminology. "Best if used by" is not a "purchase by" or safety date; it's an estimate for how long the food is expected to retain its flavor, texture and freshness.

3. Follow expiration dates on foods--they mean what they say. Throw out anything in your pantry or refrigerator that's expired. Give yourself some leeway with "sell by" dates. You don't have to throw out the rest of the milk that morning. Your nose knows: If it still smells fine, you can drink it.

4. Check packaged and boxed foods for the bar code, which is not easy to decipher. It may be coded by month, day and year, such as YYMMDD or MMDDYY. Or it may be coded using Julian numbers, whereby January 1 would be 001 and December 31 would be 365. In even more convoluted codes, letters A through M (omitting the letter I) are often assigned to the months, with A being January and M being December, plus a numeric day, either preceded or followed by the numeric year.

5. Be aware that canned foods lose from 5 to 20 percent of their nutritional content each year, depending on length of storage and temperature. Store all canned foods in a cool, dry, dark place (less than 70 degrees F (21 C) is preferred; 50 degrees F (10 C) is optimal). Try to use up canned foods within a year--rotate older ones in front of the shelf and the newer ones in back.

6. Store raw meat (beef, lamb, veal, pork) for up to five days in the refrigerator; four to twelve months in the freezer. Poultry and ground meats can be kept in the fridge for up to two days before cooking and one to four months in the freezer. For a comprehensive list of how long foods can be safely stored, see sites such as www.foodsafety.gov and pastrywiz.com/storage.

7. Package foods correctly to lengthen their storage life. Use airtight containers in the fridge and freezer. Cool foods before freezing. Reduce freezer burn by wrapping foods in plastic wrap and then sealing in an air-tight zipper locked plastic bag.

Minor Food Poisoning Symptoms

Food poisoning occurs when an individual consumes food contaminated with either an infectious virus, bacteria or parasite. Contamination is often the result of under cooking or improper handling and storage of food. The severity of symptoms vary depending on what type of contaminate was consumed as well as the health and age of the person exposed. Illness caused by food poisoning can last as long as 10 days.

Stomach Pain and Nausea

Food poisoning usually causes some degree of stomach pain and nausea.

Stomach Cramps

Individuals who have food poisoning may also experience stomach cramps.

Vomiting and Diarrhea

Individuals with food poisoning usually experience repeated episodes of vomiting and diarrhea. If the vomiting persists longer than 48 hours, consult a physician.

Poor Appetite

When suffering from food poisoning, most individuals have no interest in eating additional food while the symptoms persist.

Fatigue

Throughout the illness, individuals with food poisoning will usually feel tired, sluggish and lacking energy.

Fever

Many individuals with food poisoning will develop a fever.

Get Big Voluminous Hair

Singer Cheryl Cole arrives at an "X Factor" event in 2011.

Does your hair need a pick-me-up? Give your hair a boost of body and volume that will make you look like a star. Weak, flat and thin hair can be transformed into thick lush locks with the right products and techniques. Follow these steps to achieve the full bodied hair you've dreamed of.

Instructions

1. Shampoo and condition properly. If mega volume is your goal, be sure you are using a weightless shampoo and conditioner specifically formulated for adding volume and bounce. Average shampoos and conditioners can weigh hair down and leave it flat. Lather up well with the shampoo and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Be sure to remove all shampoo completely when you rinse. You don't want product buildup weighing you down. Apply conditioner. Use a very small amount next to your roots and distribute evenly down to the tips of your hair. Add extra on the ends if your ends are dry and damaged. Then rinse completely with lukewarm to cool water.

2. Gently towel dry your hair and comb with a wide-tooth comb. Apply a lightweight leave-in conditioner or detangling spray to your hair if it is extra dry and prone to frizz. Otherwise, skip this step.

3. Allow your hair to air dry a good bit before pulling out the hair dryer. When your locks are damp and no longer soaking wet, apply a thickening hair tonic all over hair and distribute evenly with your comb or brush.

4. Next, apply a root boosting spray or mousse to your roots only. Do not overapply, as this will leave your hair sticky and heavy. A little goes a long way.

5. Now, blow dry your hair upside down. If you are prone to frizz, blow dry regularly, as upside-down drying can roughen your hair cuticles and cause more frizz. Once your hair is dry, roll your strands up into big self-grip rollers. Conair makes excellent rollers that do this job well! Spray your hair lightly with a volumizing hair spray all over. Allow rollers to sit in your hair for 30 minutes to an hour. Then remove.

6. Gently separate your hair with your fingers, and fluff and smooth if necessary. Try not to brush your hair more at this point; you don't want to brush all the body out. Top with another light mist of hairspray and a super-light spritz of shine spray. Use the lightest shine spray you can find; anything else may be too heavy and leave your hair looking greasy.

Conquer Food Binges

Binge eating is a prevalent eating disorder today. It's less common than simple overeating because it's usually a faulty coping mechanism rather than an issue about food. Statistics show that more women than men are binge eaters but it does affect men, also. It commonly begins in the teens and twenties.

Instructions

1. Define what binge eating really is. According to the Mayo Clinic, binge eating is diagnosed when the following symptoms are seen: eating large amounts of food, eating when you aren't hungry, eating alone and hoarding food, eating rapidly during binge episodes, hiding empty food containers and frequently eating alone. Often binge eaters are depressed, anxious and very upset about their eating. They also are always on a diet but never lose weight.

2. Understand your binge eating patterns. Knowing what your binging triggers are will help you to gain control of your eating. If you binge after an argument, when a test is coming up, or when you have particular kinds of stressors, you will see a pattern. When there's a clear cut answer, know that you need to learn other ways to cope.

3. Develop healthy outlets. Some exercise is empowering because it's good for the body and soul. Tai Chi and Yoga are all about balance, exercise and a peaceful mind. Journaling is a wonderful tool to deal with turbulent inner emotions and to discover what you're hiding from yourself. Hobbies that are creative such as painting, dance, photography and playing an instrument also teach control while providing a healthy creative outlet.

4. Eat a balanced diet. If that sounds strange, understand that binge eaters are often people who make very poor food choices. You develop cravings when your body is lacking something it needs. If you pair a craving with a tendency to binge, you have a greater problem.

5. Exercise. Along with being good for your body generally, exercise greatly helps us to cope with stress. When we work up a little bit of a sweat, we release tension.

6. Join a support group. Call the newspaper or the main branch of the library and ask about support groups for people who have issues with binge eating. You don't have to give your name so you can be comfortable calling. There is also a website that provides information about finding a local support group that is listed in the resources section of this article.

7. Be kind to yourself and get help if you need it. If this is a long standing problem or it is affecting your day to day life or leaving you with no self esteem, go to a counselor. There are counselors who specialize in eating disorders. Call the local mental health clinic for some names and make an appointment. You could be taking the first step into a healthier and happier way of life.

Get A Toddler To Sleep Earlier

Story time is a good way to relax your toddler before bed.

Toddlers typically need 11 to 12 hours of sleep a night. Getting them to sleep at an earlier time ensures they will get a sufficient amount of sleep before they need to start their day. The earlier bedtime also gives you some time for yourself in the evening. As with any habit, it will take time for a change to take place. Be consistent with the new schedule and you will be rewarded with success.

Instructions

1. Observe your toddler's sleeping habits. Determine how many hours a night your toddler sleeps and calculate how early hecan go to sleep without starting the day earlier than you would like. For instance, if he sleeps 11 hours a night and you don't want him up before 7 a.m., then don't put him to bed before 8 p.m.

2. Make his bedtime earlier by 15 minutes at a time. Within four to seven days, he should become accustomed to the new time. Once he has, make it another 15 minutes earlier. Continue until he is going to bed at the time you prefer.

3. Create a bedtime routine. Don't make it too long and complicated, since you will need to start this earlier each evening as the toddler begins to go to bed earlier.

4. Give him a 15 minute "warning" before the routine will start. Tell him he needs to get ready for bed soon. Do not abruptly tell him to pick up his toys and come get ready for bed. Nobody likes interrupted in the middle of an activity; give him time to wrap up what he is doing.

5. Start with a bath to relax your child. Let him play in the tub for a bit if he enjoys this, as it is quiet play and keeps him from running around. When he gets out of the tub, put on his pajamas and let him know he is getting ready for bed.

6. Give him a snack before bed if he had an early dinner. Don't give him sweets or sugar, which keep some children from sleeping. Instead, give him a few crackers and cheese or some cereal. If your child is potty training, do not give him too many liquids or he will need to use the bathroom when he is trying to go to sleep. Have him brush his teeth when he is done.

7. Have story time to further help your child wind down. Limit the number of books you will read and don't give in to pleas for "just one more." You must be firm and not let your child prolong the bedtime routine.

8. Tuck him in, kiss him good night, and tell him you will see him in the morning. Say nothing that would indicate you think he will not fall asleep or that he will get out of bed before morning.

9. Remember to be patient, consistent and firm. He did not develop the old bedtime overnight, and going to bed earlier will not happen overnight either.

Home Remedies To Get Rid Of Pinworms

Pinworms are common in children.

According to the Mayo Clinic, pinworms are the most common type of intestinal worm infections in the United States. Pinworms are thin, white and approximately 1/4 inch in size and mainly infect school-age children. They cause itching in the anal area and may produce weight loss and loss of appetite. Most prescription medications for pinworm are pricey, making home remedies worth before dishing out a lot of money on expensive commercial products.

Garlic

Garlic has powers to remove pinworm from the intestines, according to Natural-Home Remedies. Include garlic in your daily diet to help force the pinworms out of your system. Put a mixture of garlic paste and Vaseline around the outside of your anal area. This paste can kill the eggs and give relief from itching.

Grapefruit Seed Extract

Put 10 drops of grapefruit seed extract in an 8 oz. glass of water. Drink this mixture three times daily for at least seven days. This will help rid the intestine of pinworms.

Coconut

According to the Ayushveda website, coconut is one of the most effective ways to get rid of pinworms. Take a spoonful of fresh coconut each morning with breakfast. Three hours later take a spoonful of castor oil. Repeat this daily until the pinworms are gone.

Carrots

Eat a small cup of shredded carrots each morning and before bed to help push the pinworms out of the intestines. If your child has trouble eating the carrots, mix them with a tablespoon of honey.

Pumpkin Seeds

Use raw pumpkin seeds and crush the seeds in a bowl. Mix the pumpkin seeds with about 2 cups of water and put on the stove on low heat for two hours. Do not let the mix boil. After two hours, pull the mix off the stove and allow cooling. Remove any layers of oil and filter the mix.

Take 1 tbsp. of the filtered water every 15 minutes for an hour. After two hours, take a laxative and after two more hours eat some warm oatmeal. For children 2 to 3 years old, use 45 g of pumpkin seeds. For ages 3 to 4, use 70 g of seeds. Ages 5 to 9 will use 90 g of seeds and ages 10 to 12, 150 g of pumpkin seeds. Adults should use 300 g of pumpkin seeds, according to Great Home Remedies. An oz. is about 25 g.

Why Does Loud Music Hurt My Ears

Loud music can cause ear damage.

Loud music hurts your ears because loud noises damage the hairs lining the cochlea, the sensory organ in the inner ear. Over time, exposure to loud noises can noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) or tinnitus (ringing in the ears).

Definition

"Loud music" is music played at an unsafe decibel level for long-term exposure. An average conversation is around 65 dB, while an iPod's highest setting is around 100 dB, and rock concerts and clubs regularly reach 110 to 120 dB.

Hearing Loss

Hearing loss due to noise exposure can be temporary or permanent. Symptoms include trouble hearing over background noise, muffled hearing, a feeling of stuffiness or "fullness" in the ears and speaking loudly.

Tinnitus

Another possible effect of loud music is tinnitus, a sensation of noises in the ear, including ringing and buzzing. Tinnitus can cause trouble sleeping, stress and anxiety.

Prevention

You can prevent ear damage from loud music by protecting your ears. Use noise-canceling headphones instead of turning the music up to be audible over background noise, and wear ear plugs at concerts and clubs.

Treatment

Unfortunately, ear damage cannot be reversed. Hearing aids may be recommended to treat hearing loss, and white noise machines can help cancel out the phantom noises of tinnitus.

Plant Your Ginkgo Seeds

Ginkgo trees have an ancient heritage. They can be as tall as 100 feet, with trunks as wide as 4 feet in diameter. It all begins with a humble ginkgo seed. With proper collection, seed extraction and germination, you will be on your way to adorning your yard with the graceful ginkgo tree in years to come.

Instructions

1. Obtain ginkgo seeds from ginkgo nuts. If you live in a rare North American region with mature ginkgo trees, gather ginkgo nuts in the fall. Ginkgo nuts are oval, green or yellow, and about an inch long. The fruit of the nut surrounds its seed. Remove the pungent fruit to access the seeds. Most ginkgo trees grow in Asia. If you have access to a local Oriental grocer, you may obtain seeds there. According to Jeff Blackadar's article, "Growing Ginkgoes from Seed," ginkgo seeds also are called white nuts or, in Japanese, ginnan. You may also locate ginkgo seeds online.

2. Gather ginkgo nuts to obtain seeds for planting. While ginkgo nuts drop in the fall, Blackadar suggests leaving them on the ground until January. This allows the embryo to fully develop. Of course, this method leaves the nuts vulnerable to squirrels and other nut-gatherers. If you gather ginkgo nuts when they drop, remove the seeds and place in a moisture-tight plastic bag. Store in the refrigerator until you decide to germinate them.

3. Begin germinating ginkgo seeds in January. Mix peat moss with water and knead the mixture well to moisten. Peat moss should be moist, not dripping. If you can form a ball that retains its shape without dripping water, you have a good mixture. Add more peat moss or water as needed. Add two handfuls of peat moss to a moisture-proof sandwich baggie. Add five ginkgo seeds and seal the bag. Leave the bag at room temperature for two to three weeks.

4. Plant the ginkgo seedlings. It takes a few weeks for all of the seeds to be ready. Once all of the seeds are sprouted with roots and baby leaves, plant the seedlings in 4-inch pots. Consistently water the new plants. Mist the plants for the first week to allow them to adjust to being outside of the baggie's moist environment. If you begin germinating in January, the seedlings will be ready to plant in the ground after the last frost, which will vary according to region. Plant with access to full-sun. Keep well-watered and well-drained.

Acupressure For Sinus Pain

Your sinuses are air pockets located in your forehead, between your eyes and in your cheekbones. They are connected to your nasal passages by small channels, which allow the air to flow from your nose into your sinuses, and for your mucus to drain from your sinuses into your nose. If there is too much mucus build-up in the sinuses, the air will not be able to freely flow from the sinus to the nasal passage, resulting in sinus pain.

Acupressure History

Acupressure is an ancient Chinese treatment derived from acupuncture. It is based on the belief that life energy, called qi, runs through your body along 14 main channels, or meridians. If any of these meridians become obstructed, our qi becomes blocked, resulting in pain or illness. Acupuncture and acupressure stimulate specific points along the meridians, called acupoints, which stimulate the body to heal itself. The modern Western view is that acupuncture and acupressure work by stimulating your central nervous system, which causes your body to release biochemicals that aid in the process of healing.

Acupressure Treatment Method

Acupressure is similar to acupuncture, except physical pressure is used on the acupoints instead of needles. Physical pressure may be applied by a hand, elbow or certain devices designed for acupressure, such as an acu ball or energy roller.

Acupressure for Sinus Pain

There are hundreds of acupoints in the body, including on either side of the nostrils, the middle of the forehead between the eyebrows, and the sides of the bridge of the nose. Treating sinus pain with acupressure involves applying physical pressure to these acupoints. If you feel pain in one of these areas, this is likely where you have excessive mucus build-up.

Acupressure for sinus pain is not limited to the face; there are other acupoints on the body, such as the back of the neck or tops of the hands, that practitioners claim are effective in relieving sinus pain.

Cautions

Many people who have tried acupressure for sinus relief says it has worked for them, but it does not work for everyone. It is advisable that you consult your doctor before undergoing acupressure treatment. If you have no experience with acupressure, see a licensed acupressure practitioner rather than attempt self treatment.

Efficacy

Acupuncture and acupressure are alternative medical treatments that have been widely accepted by the Western medical community. Most of the evidence that acupressure relieves sinus pain is anecdotal. Though studies have proven that acupuncture can help reduce pain, there has been no conclusive scientific study done that proves that acupressure relieves and reduces sinus pain.

Know If A Snail Has The Rat Lungworm

Common rats carry the lungworm parasite.

Rat lungworm, or Angiostrongyliasis, is a parasitic worm found in the pulmonary arteries of rats. When the rat passes its feces, the waste is sometimes eaten by small snails and other mollusks. The parasite is then passed on to the snail. Humans can contract the parasite from ingesting these snails. We contract the parasite when we eat small snails living on vegetables and fruits or when we eat snails themselves. There is no method to tell if a snail has rat lungworm before ingesting it. However, using sensible precautionary measures reduces the risk.

Instructions

Preventing Rat Lungworm

1. Washing Vegetables

Wash fruit and vegetables extremely well and thoroughly wipe dry. Thoroughly clean any dishes and utensils used in the preparation of raw vegetables. Removing rats and snails found near gardens also reduces risk.

2. Snail

Do not handle snails with bare hands and wash them well before cooking. Cook snails thoroughly by boiling them for at least five minutes. Thoroughly wash utensils and dishes used in the preparation of raw snails. Remove rats from areas where snails are harvested.

3. Check for symptoms of lungworm cantonensis correctly. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, severe headaches and neck stiffness. The symptoms mimic bacterial meningitis.

4. Check for symptoms of lungworm costaricensis correctly. Symptoms include severe abdominal pains, fever, nausea and vomiting. It mimics appendicitis.

Complications Of Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes frequent and unexplained seizures. Epilepsy is more common among children and teenagers but can occur at anytime in a person's life. Though some causes of epilepsy are unknown, most people diagnosed generally have had severe head trauma, a genetic influence, or the condition is brought on from a disease or developmental disorder. The severity of each person's symptoms differs along with the triggers, so it is always important to seek medical attention to prevent any problems.

Symptoms

Many people diagnosed are aware of what causes their seizures and are able to avoid triggers, but others are unaware and do not have a warning. Epilepsy affects all neurological activities during a seizure, which can alter physical ability, emotions and the sensations of touch, taste and sound. Common signs of a seizure include legs jerking, loss of consciousness, confusion during and after, vision loss, deafness and spacing out. Each person's severity of seizures differs and can occur in one part of the brain and others affect the whole brain, changing the symptoms.

Control Loss

During a seizure, many people lose control of their body, which may cause them to fall, wherever they are standing or sitting. Depending on where a person is during a seizure, he could potentially fall and break a bone or cause a head injury. Drowning is also more common among those diagnosed with epilepsy since they could fall while showering or swimming if alone. Those with epilepsy have to be aware of potential incidents daily while operating machinery, or performing basic activities to prevent injury to themselves or others around them.

Pregnancy Complications

Those with epilepsy are perfectly able to become pregnant and carry their baby to term. Seizures during pregnancy are very dangerous and can affect the development of the fetus and the mother's well-being. Medications that control seizures brought on by epilepsy also produce abnormalities to babies, so medical attention is important. Expecting mothers may need attentive monitoring and adjustments in medications.

Status Epilepticus

Status epilepticus occurs when a person with epilepsy has numerous recurring seizures without regaining consciousness or continuous seizure activity, which may last more than five minutes and sometimes up to 30 minutes. Classifications of status epilepticus, similar to epilepsy, range from person to person, and can usually fall under convulsive or non-convulsive depending on the severity. Those with status epilepticus should consult a doctor to prevent worsening since this condition can sometimes cause permanent brain damage and sometimes death.

Sudden Death

Sudden unexplained death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is uncommon, usually affecting one in 1000 people diagnosed with epilepsy. SUDEP does not have any warning signs, and usually the death is abrupt and unexpected. Along with a lack of warning signs, SUDEP does not seem to have any noticeable causes. The presence of status epilepticus is one factor known to raise the risks of SUDEP, though not a certainty. Controlling seizures through treatment can also help to prevent an occurrence of SUDEP, while also controlling epilepsy.

Replace The Intake Manifold In A Nissan Pathfinder

The Nissan Pathfinder prides itself as a sport utility vehicle on its appeal to "truck people." Produced between 1989 and 1995, the truck was offered with four different engines. The procedure for removing and installing the intake manifold in the Z24i and KA24E is the same and easily undertaken by a do-it-yourself mechanic.

Instructions

Remove the Intake Manifold

1. Relieve the pressure in the fuel system and drain the coolant (see Warnings). Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the hoses to the air cleaner. Disconnect the radiator hoses from the manifold, then remove the throttle cable and disconnect the fuel pipe and the return line.

3. Label all wires, hoses and connections with masking tape. Label the connection with the same number as the hose or wire to be disconnected, then match them later when reconnecting.

4. Remove the GGR and PCV tube from the back side of the intake manifold. Remove the manifold supports.

5. Loose the bolts to the manifold and then remove them. Lift the manifold with the injectors from the engine.

Install the Intake Manifold

6. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces thoroughly using compressed air and solvent. Install a new gasket and then set the manifold in place on the engine.

7. Tighten the mounting bolts working from the center out in a criss-cross pattern. Use several passes to tighten the bolts to 12 to 15 foot pounds.

8. Connect all electrical lines and vacuum tubes, including the EGR and PCV tubes to the back side of the manifold. Set the intake manifold supports in place.

9. Install the throttle cable after reconnecting the fuel pipe and return line. Connect the radiator hoses to the manifold and install the air cleaner hoses.

10. Refill the cooling system with the proper type and amount of coolant. Connect the negative battery cable.

11. Start the engine. Examine all the connections for fuel, oil or vacuum leaks.

What Is The Difference Between Triple & Quadruple Bypass Surgery

Bypass surgery can be a lifesaving medical procedure.

Heart disease is a serious medical condition, but coronary artery bypass surgery can drastically improve the lives of patients who suffer from clogged arteries. Multiple bypasses can be done in one surgical procedure.

Reasons

Bypass surgery becomes necessary when the arteries that carry blood to the heart become clogged. Plaque builds up in the arteries, which slows and in some cases stops blood flow. This condition can result in chest pain or a heart attack.

Definition

Bypass surgery is technically known as coronary artery bypass surgery. This is a surgical procedure that relieves angina and coronary artery disease. A successful outcome will significantly reduce the risk of death from coronary disease.

Process

The surgeon uses veins or arteries from other parts of the patient's body, like the leg. These veins are grafted onto the patient's coronary arteries to bypass the clogged area. This improves blood flow to the heart.

Types

The difference between a triple and a quadruple bypass is simply how many bypasses are done. A quadruple bypass means that each of the four major arteries supplying the heart required a bypass. A triple bypass means only three of the four arteries were clogged. It is possible to have a single or double bypass as well.

History

The first bypass surgery was done on May 2, 1960. It was performed at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in New York. The doctor who led the team was Dr. Robert Goetz.

Uses Of Neem Leaf Powder

Neem leaves demonstrate a wide range of medicinal properties.

More and more people are steering away from synthetic drugs as they discover safer, cheaper and sometimes more effective natural home remedies. Neem leaves, for example, demonstrate a wide range of medicinal benefits and exhibit immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, anti-hyperglycemic, anti-ulcer, antimalarial, antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic properties. Many people throughout the world use this invaluable Indian leaf in its powder form to treat conditions of the skin and hair, as a natural pesticide and insecticide and for other uses.

Skin

Use Neem leaf powder to treat and even cure a variety of skin conditions. Neem helps to relieve itching and redness of irritated skin, lighten scars, moisturize dry and cracked skin and treat skin infections. Treat eczema, psoriasis and even acne by applying Neem powder to problem areas on the skin. Several skin care products already contain Neem, but it is not necessary to purchase special brands in order to experience its benefits. Add Neem powder to the face washes, lotions and salt scrubs you already have.

Hair and Scalp

Neem powder contains properties that help relieve a dry and itchy scalp. Neem also works to effectively treat dandruff. Prolonged use of Neem powder on the hair and scalp promotes shiny, silky and healthy hair. According to DiscoverNeem.com, Neem helps eliminate head lice, promotes hair growth and aids in the decrease of hair loss and in deterring premature graying.

Insecticide

Sprinkled onto soil, Neem leaf powder acts as a natural pesticide and insecticide. Rather than immediately killing the pests and insects, though, Neem powder controls and lessens the population by affecting their life cycle. In other words, Neem enters the pests' and insects' systems and blocks certain hormones. The bugs forget to mate or stop laying eggs. Many people will add Neem powder to fertilizers, as well.

Herbs That Will Treat Or Cure Chronic Prostatitis

Men who are suffering from prostatitis that has not responded to conventional therapy or those who seek alternative methods of treatment may find temporary---or even permanent---relief from herbal remedies. Prostatitis, an inflammation of the prostate gland, is not really a single disease but a group of related disorders with similar symptoms, some of which can be extremely painful.

Causes and symptoms

The causes of prostatitis, according to MayoClinic.com, are not completely understood, although the acute form of the disorder is most often caused by a bacterial infection. Because it is sometimes difficult for an antibiotic to kill all the bacteria associated with a case of acute bacterial prostatitis, this form of the disorder sometimes becomes chronic. There is, however, another chronic form of prostatitis that is not caused by bacteria and about which medical researchers know relatively little. Symptoms for all forms of prostatitis include difficulty and/or pain while urinating; frequent urination, particularly at night; pain in the groin, abdomen or lower back; pain upon ejaculation; pain in the perineum, the area between the penis and the anus; and penile or testicular pain.

Advantages of herbal remedies

Urologist Mark W. McClure, author of Smart Medicine for a Healthy Prostate, writes that he frequently recommends herbal remedies to his prostatitis patients even though this mode of treatment is generally not as fast-acting as prescription medication. On the plus side, herbal supplements cause fewer side effects and are less expensive. McClure writes, "Furthermore, herbal remedies generally alleviate the symptoms of prostatitis (especially nonbacterial prostatitis) more effectively than do prescription medicines."

Europeans go herbal

Europeans have long embraced the use of herbal remedies in the treatment of prostate disorders, according to an online article about natural prostate health by Laurance Johnston, PhD. He said Americans lag far behind their European counterparts in acknowledging the effectiveness of these natural remedies despite the extensive body of scientific research on the subject.

Saw Palmetto

Widely used in Germany to treat the symptoms of prostatitis, saw palmetto is readily available to Americans in health food stores and in the nutritional supplement departments of most large retailers, such as Walmart and Target. This herb is particularly helpful in bringing relief from such symptoms as general pain and inflammation in the pelvic region, frequent nighttime urination, difficulty in starting urination, and impotence. As previously observed, most herbal remedies, saw palmetto included, take longer to produce results, but do bring relief to most patients who try them.

Other Herbal Remedies

Lycopene, a natural bioflavonoid found in tomatoes, contains a powerful antioxidant that helps to prevent prostate cancer, and it also helps to relieve the prostatitis symptoms of frequent urination and dribbling. Widely touted as a natural antibiotic, goldenseal has been shown to be effective in killing most bacteria that cause prostatitis. It is also useful in reducing urinary tract inflammation and shrinking a swollen prostate gland.

Guided Meditation Exercises

Meditation refers to a host of practices that engage the mind to cultivate awareness and acceptance. According to meditation master Chögyam Trungpa, meditation creates a space in which to expose and undo your neurotic games, your self deceptions, and your hidden fears and hopes.

In a guided meditation session, you sit with your eyes closed as an outside agent guides you through an imaginary journey. You can participate in a group setting or by listening to a recording at home.

Structure

Most guided meditation sessions follow a generic script that targets an area of concern, such as promoting health, relieving tension, experiencing emotional well-being or managing pain. Regardless of the goal, a good meditation script follows an established pattern, which includes a beginning, a middle and an end.

Activities

To begin, you need to feel comfortable and safe in the meditation setting. In a group sitting, the instructor usually takes a few minutes to allow you to settle into the unfamiliar surroundings, while providing comforting words. If at home, settle into a quiet location without distractions.

This settling in spills over to a short relaxation phase. Many practices encourage you to merely close your eyes and follow the movements of your breath, along with the expanding and contracting of your stomach. Other practices might suggest you to visualize a quiet, comfortable place such as a rose garden or a bubbling spring. Regardless, the key to starting your journey is to relax.

Now, it is time to start the journey. To do this, most scripts begin with an imaginary entry point such as a gate or cave opening. After entering, you wander through this imaginary realm, stopping occasionally to inspect objects or areas of particular interest. For example, you might pick up a rock with writing on it, or maybe you find a lost object in the sand.

However, not all journeys take you to undiscovered lands. Other journeys move through the body. For example, a general deep-relaxation script attempts to discover, then release, pockets of tension by focusing on various body parts: toes, calves, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, chest, fingers, wrist, arms, shoulders, jaw, cheeks and the crown of the head.

Other scripts focus on particular needs. To deal with pain, a healing script might first direct you to calmly, without attachment, observe the area of concern. You then attempt to lessen the pain or heal the sight by visualizing a cold compress, or breathing in light. As described by Dr. David Fontana, you can imagine a white light flooding into the body on each in-breath and directing it to the area requiring healing.

To end the journey, you return to the starting point. After that, you bring your attention back into your body, and then into your physical surroundings. Wait until you feel grounded and connected before opening your eyes. You may feel a little disoriented at first, so take your time when returning to your active lifestyle.

Find Your Mind'S Eye

The mind's eye is that place where you picture images in you brain when you close your eyes. It is the dream center that allows you to visualize your hopes and dreams. It can also bring your fears to life. To find the mind's eye you only have to think hard and imagine. Modern neuroscientists have even done studies that suggest visual images are created in one particular region of the brain. Being able to visualize something and actually see with accurate detail is a positive life skill.

Instructions

1. Clear your mind of distractions. Some people use meditation to reach a relaxed state of mind. Once your mind is clear, you can focus on one thought.

2. Think about an ambition you have or a goal you wish to accomplish. For example: If it is a better job, picture yourself behind the desk that goes with that job. If it is learning to play the piano, picture yourself sitting at a piano. Do this for whatever it is you seek to achieve.

3. Expand on the image in your head. You must be able to see the image vividly and in full clarity. It is not enough to be able to see the image; it has to come to life like a movie playing in your mind.

4. Feel the image in your mind. As you see it, you must also hear it, smell it and believe it is happening. For example: If you envision playing a piano, you must hear the actually music coming from the piano and see your fingers moving over the keys. Think about where you are playing the piano and how many people are enjoying your performance. By connecting emotion to the visual image in your mind's eye, you are training your brain to accept this image as reality.

5. Visualize images in your mind's eye frequently. Whatever images you are imaging must be repeatedly viewed in your mind. The more you visualize, the stronger your mind's eye will get.

6. Hold the images in your mind, undistracted, for as long as you can at a time. The more you can convince your mind that this is reality, the quicker your brain will begin to think and act in ways that allow you to achieve your goals.

How Do You Get The Hpv Virus

HPV---A Common Disease

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus that can cause genital warts or cervical cancer, and it is also the most common sexually transmitted disease. As it is a virus, it is not treatable with antibiotics. Practicing safe sexual practices can help prevent infection. However, HPV is spread through genital contact, so even this cannot completely prevent transmission. According to the CDC, almost three out of four Americans will be infected with genital HPV at some point in their lives.

HPV infection does not necessarily mean that a sexual partner has cheated---the virus can remain dormant in the body for months or years, only to break out some time long after infection. The CDC does not recommend testing other partners for HPV, and at this time there is no conclusive test that tells if men carry the virus. Though individuals who have casual and frequent sexual encounters are certainly at a higher risk for all STDs, those who are monogamous may transmit the disease or have an outbreak at some time in their lives as well. The ASHA "Questions and Myths about HPV" page notes that 80 percent of people who have fewer than four partners have been infected with HPV at some point in their life.

Transmission of HPV

The CDC notes that HPV is usually transmitted through genital-to-genital contact during intimacy. The virus can infect most parts of the male and female reproductive system, including the rectum, vulva and cervix. It can also infect the mouth and the throat. Any sexual activity that causes contact between any area that could be infected with HPV can cause transmission. Since HPV is so common and can be hard to trace, even monogamous sexual contact can put an individual at risk for HPV.

Complications

There are many different strains of HPV, and different strains cause different results. Many HPV infections are defeated by the body's immune system within two years and may not be noticed by either partner. Some varieties cause genital warts, which can be flat, cauliflower-like, or irritated. These warts can be itchy and can be treated at the doctor's office. The strains of HPV that cause genital warts do not cause cancer. Some strains can cause cancer, however. If the body's immune system cannot defeat these HPV infections in due time, they can cause cells to mutate into precancers, which morph into cancer if not treated. The CDC notes that HPV is linked to cancers of the cervix, mouth, throat and anus, though anal, mouth and throat cancers are very uncommon.

Prevention

Though condoms do not provide complete protection against transmission of the virus, they do offer some protection as they reduce skin-to-skin contact. Likewise, the use of dental dams and condoms for oral stimulation and latex gloves for digital stimulation can reduce the risk of infection, though it is not completely eliminated.

Find Relief And Live With Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a medical skin condition which presents as red thick patches called plaques and can become dry, silvery scales. It is a chronic skin condition where their is an abnormal accelerated rate of growth of skin cells than normal. The normal rate of skin renewal is approximately 28 days and versus the abnormal accelerated rate of 4 days in psoriasis. These plaques or thick scaly lesions appear often on the scalp, face, elbows, knees, palms, and soles of the feet. Sometimes it affects the fingernails and toenails which can present as pitting, discoloration, shape changes, or even loss of the entire nail.

There are several types of psoriasis and only a medical doctor can make the particular diagnosis and give the appropriate treatment. This article will help give some ways to find relief from the symptoms of psoriasis and live with this medical condition.

Instructions

1. To try and find some relief form the itchiness and dryness of the psoriatic skin try using different types of emollients like body oils or petroleum jelly. The most effective way is to use it in the bath so you can soak in the solution and this will help to soothe the skin and reduce the itchiness.

2. Another way to find relief is to use oatmeal bath or compresses. You can mix a packet of oatmeal into a bowl of warm water and make into a paste. Then apply directly on to the affected area repeat as necessary.

3. Coal tar medication seems to work on reducing the severity if the symptoms of psoriasis. Over-the-counter coal tar can be found in shampoos for people with psoriasis on the scalp or as tar soap bars which can be used in showers and baths. The problem with coal tar is that it can leave a strong odor and stain clothes. Also be careful since coal tar can make the skin very sensitive to the sunlight.

4. Another way to find relief form psoriasis of the scalp is to use olive oil. Warm some olive oil and massage into the scalp or leave on the scalp for 20 minutes or overnight by wearing a shower cap. Wash out the oil with a medicated coal tar shampoo and repeat the process several times during the week until the psoriasis clears up .

5. Direct sunlight is a wonderful way to find relief the symptoms of psoriasis. UV light works on fighting against psoriasis in particular the ultraviolet B rays. But be careful when exposed to direct sunlight since this will increase the risk of skin cancer. remember to cover the exposed skin with sun blockers.

6. To help with the itching use hydrocortisone topical creams. look carefully to make sure you buy either the 0.5 % or 1% cream. Sometimes the psoriasis is so severe that only prescription cortisone cream will be able to help the inflamed itchy symptoms of psoriasis. Remember that continuous use of these medications will make the treatment less effective. There is also the rebound effect of the medication where the drug becomes ineffective and the psoriasis will return.

7. Another way to reduce the spread and even clear up the psoriasis is to cover up the affected areas with tape for several days. This will make the skin soft and reduce the proliferation rate of the skin cells.

8. Adding eicosapentaenic acid (EPA) to the diet has the effect of reducing the area and thickness of the lesions as well as reducing the redness and swelling.

9. Avoid drinking alcohol because this will make the psoriasis even worse.

10. Losing weight and exercising will help to reduce the severity of the psoriasis. Research into the onset off psoriasis is related in part to the stresses we are faced with in life. Try to find the major stressors in your life and find ways to reduce them or eliminate the stresses from your life.

11. try herbal remedies to find some relief from psoriasis. For example, try Oregon grape root, a herb with known chemicals that fight the bacteria and decrease skin eruptions.

12. Nutrition is an important factor to consider when you are suffering from psoriasis. Taking in the right amount of minerals and vitamins will help to keep the skin in a healthy condition and also to help heal the and reduce the lesions or plaques on the skin.

Who Can Help With Out Of Control Teens

Sometimes it seems as if out-of-control teens are beyond help. Despite this feeling of frustration, a person should never give up on a teenager. A combination of tough love and bundles of support can help a troubled teenager turn his life around. Groups and individuals are available who can help in this process.

Parents

Sometimes teens are out of control because of their parents. However, even if an out-of-control teen needs more help than the parents can give, parents should remain visible and supportive for a teen who is having trouble.

Wilderness Boot Camps

Some teens are sent to wilderness boot camps for periods ranging from weeks to months. These camps are available throughout the United States. The camp's leaders are trained to help the teens learn to survive in their surroundings and deal with the problems they are facing. Building self-esteem can go a long way toward helping an out-of-control teen.

Therapists

Some teens act out because of previous traumatic experiences. Therapists can help teens learn process these experiences in a healthy way.

Military Schools

Sometimes teens simply need more discipline. Military schools provide a structure and regimentation that helps some out-of-control teens regain some balance in their lives.

Counselors

School counselors are trained to do much more now than simply help teens apply for colleges. Counselors receive specialized training to help teens deal with issues like drugs, depression, suicidal thoughts and family problems.

Selftest For Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder. It is called bipolar because of the swing between depression and mania. Depression is characterized by sadness, lack of pleasure in anything, and thoughts of suicide. Mania shows up in the form of excessive energy, little need for sleep, and a tendency to be very impulsive.Learn what the symptoms are for this mood disorder and if you or a loved one needs medical treatment.

Instructions

DSM IV TR definition

1. There are two types of bipolar disorders. They are bipolar disorder I (BPDI) and bipolar disorder II (BPDII). BPD-I is diagnosed if there is at least one instance of mania, while BPD-II has to have at least one instance of hypomania. Hypomania and mania have symptoms including distractability, pressured speech, lack of need for sleep, and grandiosity, but hypomania is a lesser form that usually does not have the same kind of impairment and possible need for hospitalization.

2. There are two self tests I will discuss that can be helpful in deciding if you struggle with BPDI or II. They should not take the place of appropriate professional evaluation and treatment. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Vol. IV, (DSM-IV) is the reference book utilized by mental health professionals to diagnose any mental health condition. The first self test is simply to look at the symptoms for BPDI or II and consider your symptoms. If you meet the criteria, you may be struggling with this mental illness.

3. Consider your symptoms honestly as you look at the criteria. The list is under mood disorders in the DSM-IV. It is also online at various sites, including Mindsite. Please look at both Bipolar Disorder I and II as you may rule out one and still meet the requirements for the second. This list will ask you to look at time frames and symptoms of depression and/or mania. (See Resources for website information.)

4. This next step is a difficult one, as it entails hearing feedback on your behavior. It is important to maintain objectivity. You should elicit input from those you trust about what they have observed in your behavior and mood. Often our ability to see ourselves is distorted and it is vital to receive accurate information.

5. As you go through the list, write down the ones you believe you apply to you. If a loved one is giving you input, you could ask them to also make a list utilizing the same criteria and focusing on what they have seen in their interactions with you. This list will not only help you to decide if you may meet the diagnosis, it will be invaluable when you see a mental health provider.

Self Test for Bipolar disorder I and II

6. The DSM IV TR is written for clinicians, and is somewhat difficult to understand without studying. There are many easier tests. One of these is listed at Blackdoginstitute online. This website is designed to educate and offer information on depression and bipolar disorder. The self test is fairly easy to follow.

7. There are three questions that are asked. If the answer to any of the three is negative, then you are done and there is less of a possibility that you suffer from bipolar disorder. These three questions are about evidence of depression, mood cycling, and increase in energy at times. They all have to be affirmative for you to continue. The remaining questions are about what your life is like during your times of high energy. This test is quick and is scored automatically.

8. Once your test is scored, you will have an idea of whether you have bipolar disorder. This website will also give you information about what to do next. It will suggest that you follow up with a mental health professional. Persons struggling with bipolar disorder can live productive lives with support, information, and professional intervention.

Character Development In Early Childhood

The early childhood years are an especially important period when it comes to a child's character development.

Other species move to adulthood much quicker than humans, who are dependent for several years. The early years are a formative time for character development. Neglect in any area can have a cumulative impact on a child's character.

The First 18 Months

The mother's role is critical to the character development of a child.

In the book "Early Childhood Counts: A Programming Guide on Early Childhood Care for Development," authors Judith L. Evans, Robert G. Meyers and Ellen Ilfield posit that the months immediately after birth are a critical time in regard to brain maturation because it is during those months that the number of synapses (the connections that allow learning to take place) increase 20-fold. This means that any sort of neglect--whether nutrition or interaction--creates a much greater risk for developing character difficulties (e.g., behavioral, cognitive and emotional).

Eighteen Months to 3 Years

When the child begins to learn language, the communication between parent and child is easier.

With language, a child begins to learn control impulses through words. In the book "The Magic Years: Understanding and Handling the Problems of Early Childhood," Selma H. Frailberg suggests that language makes everything easier for the child. For example, the word "bye-bye" allows children to separate more gracefully from the parents while the word "night-night" makes them feel better about going to bed. This means that special attention must be given to helping children learn language because it makes rituals easier for them, which will affect their character, such as separation issues, later in life.

Three to 6 Years

A child with a socially sensitive character makes a good addition to society.

Between the years of 3 and 6, a child moves from believing that she is the center of the universe to a more modest position in the human society. According to Frailberg, these are the years that a child develops "social sensitivity," so it is important that the child has stable and loving people in a stable and loving environment in order for the child to develop a socially sensitive character (i.e., one where she considers the feelings of other people as well as her own).

Discipline and Character

A child who has discipline values cooperation and self-control over their actions.

Discipline is a word that has gotten a bad reputation because it's seen as synonymous with punishment, especially corporal punishment; however, according to Frailberg, discipline, in its truest definition, "training that develops self-control, character or orderliness and efficiency," is important because it aids in a child's cooperation as well as his self-control over his actions.

Conscience Building

A child will have improved self-control by age 3, but no awareness of that self-control.

Frailberg notes that by age 3, most children will have improved self-control, but no conscience in the strict meaning of the word. Self-control is still dependent mainly on the approval or disapproval of her parents. A conscience is made up of standards and prohibitions which have been taken over by the personality or character and that governs behavior from within; this kind of conscience doesn't emerge until 5 or 6 years of age. It will become a permanent and stable part of the character by the 9th or 10th year.

Fears

Parents shouldn't play along with a child's irrational fears.

Frailberg has found that parents often don't help positive character-building in children by policing the environment for monsters under the bed or ghosts in the closet; it is better to deal with the fears openly and help the child deal with them in the same way.The child must learn to manage the irrational fears (i.e. parents should not pretend like the monsters could be there), since this encourages feelings of helplessness and defenseless before imagined dangers, which can cause their character to be marked by overaggressiveness and defiance later in life.

Symptoms Of Endometriosis Cysts

Endometriosis is a condition in which uterine lining is found elsewhere in the body, such as the stomach, causing cysts. This painful condition cannot be cured, but is treatable. Consult with an OB/GYN to confirm any suspected symptoms.

Identification of Common Symptoms of Endometriosis

Pain is considered to be the most common symptom of endometriosis. Pelvic pain tends to follow the menstrual cycle, but occasionally occurs at different times. This pain can be debilitating, even with the use of mild painkillers. It can also be felt in the lower back.

Time Frame of Pain Symptoms

Pain symptoms can be experienced before, during, or after menstruation. They may occur during ovulation. Other times may include during the bowel movements or urination, during, or after intercourse.

Symptoms of Endometriosis Associated With Menstruation

In addition to pain, a woman suffering from endometriosis tends to have very heavy and irregular bleeding during menstruation. Sometimes she bleeds in between periods. She also has a lot of abdominal bloating.

Effects of Endometriosis

In addition to the cysts, endometriosis can also cause scar tissue and adhesions, which bind internal organs together. This can lead to infertility in 1/3 to 1/2 of cases. Infertility is the reason many cases are diagnosed.

Misconceptions of Endometriosis Cyst Symptoms

Endometriosis cyst symptoms can often be mistaken for other conditions, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Pelvic Inflammatory Disorder, or ovarian cysts.

Donnatol Side Effects

Donnatol or Donnatal is a prescription medication used to treat stomach cramps caused by disorders of your bowel or intestines. Despite its effectiveness, Donnatal poses a risk for side effects in some patients.

Types of Common Side Effects

Common side effects of Donnatal include dry mouth, dizziness, difficulty urinating, decreased urination, blurred vision, decreased sense of taste, nausea, vomiting, impotence, bloating and pain in your muscles or bones.

Time Frame

Side effects of Donnatal typically begin within a few days of treatment and gradually subside once your body becomes acclimated to the drug.

Features: Drug Interactions

There are some medications that increase your risk of side effects from Donnatal, including antidepressants, antihistamines, barbiturates, narcotic pain relievers, corticosteroids and sedatives. When taken with blood thinners like Warfarin, Donnatal increases your risk of developing uncontrollable bleeding.

Risks

Because Donnatal has the potential to decrease sweating, it poses the risk for heatstroke in some patients. Donnatal contains a barbiturate medication that can cause physical dependence and severe withdrawal symptoms if use of the drug is suddenly stopped, including convulsions and delirium.

Risks

Since it has the potential to cause dizziness, you should not operate a motor vehicle or heavy machinery until you know how Donnatal will affect you. Patients over the age of 65 are more susceptible to the side effects of Donnatal.

Compare Schizophrenia Medication

The first medication to treat schizophrenia came on the market in 1952. Since then, scientists have made significant advancements in drug development and new antipsychotic medications can help schizophrenia patients better manage their symptoms with fewer undesirable side effects. Before beginning a course of treatment, you must discuss schizophrenia medications with your prescribing doctor, making sure to compare the costs and benefits of each drug to find the best fit.

Instructions

1. Understand that there is no cure for schizophrenia before you research and compare medications. Antipsychotic drugs can effectively treat and control the illness, but do not guard against recurrence of its physical and mental symptoms.

2. Talk to your physician. Only qualified medical professionals can properly diagnose schizophrenia and prescribe appropriate medications. Ask your doctor for information about which medications he recommends so you can make a collaborative decision about your drug treatment plan.

3. Understand the side effects of so-called typical antipsychotics like Haldol and Thorazine. These drugs, whose development precedes 1990, generally carry several undesirable side effects, including sedation, a movement disorder called Tardive dyskinesia and, more rarely, liver problems and blood disorders.

4. Review the side effects of atypical, or newer antipsychotic medications used to treat schizophrenia. Compared to their older counterparts, atypical antipsychotics, like Risperdal and Seroquel, tend to have fewer and less severe side effects. The most common serious side effect of these medications is significant weight gain, which may lead to diabetes, and a rare blood disorder.

5. Determine your level of insurance coverage for schizophrenia medications. Typically, generic medications, if available and included in your prescription formulary, are much more affordable than brand name drugs. After you compare costs, talk to your doctor about whether the least expensive medications can effectively treat your illness.

Know If Thrush Is Contagious

Thrush is an infection caused by yeast known as candida fungus. There is always a small amount of candida fungus in the mouth, but normally it is kept within balance by bacteria and microorganisms. Sometimes the body becomes immune to infection because the body is stressed due to certain illness or medications that disrupt the balance. This allows the Candida fungus to form an infection causing thrush. Candida fungus is not limited to just the mouth. It also cause diaper rash in infants or vaginal yeast infections in women. Since everyone already has the candida fungus in their bodies, it is contagious, but you can take steps to prevent the spread of thrush.

Instructions

1. Determine if it is thrush. It is fairly easy to spot thrush. Thrush appears as white bumps on the inside on of the mouth. When you rub these bumps, they will bleed slightly and leave a shiny red spot. The spots may look similar to cottage cheese or a spider web. These bumps normally start on the tongue or inner checks but can spread to the roof of your mouth, gums, tonsils. Your baby appear hungry but refuse to drink because the sores hurt their mouth. The infection may also cause them to run a fever. Nursing mothers may have red, shiny nipples, intense pain when nursing, and deep breast pain.

2. See the doctor. It is important to see to confirm the thrush along with determining the cause of the infection. An examination of the bump can confirm if it is thrush.

3. Prevent the spread. Thrush is most contagious to some one who already has it. A baby who has thrush is very likely to get a yeast diaper rash or to reinfect themselves. There are some easy ways to prevent reinfection. Boil everything that would normally come in contact with the mouth. This includes forks, spoons, bottles, nipples, pacifiers, and teething toys by boiling for 5 minutes. Take child care providers. Wash your hands often. If you cloth diaper, use disposable if possible.

4. Limit sugar and yeast-containing foods in your diet. These foods will just encourage the growth of more yeast.

5. Finish the medication. The best way to prevent thrush from being contagious is to take all the medicine. If you don't fully stop the infection, it can come back again.

6. Sterilize again. It is really important that you take the time to re-sterilize everything that comes into contact with the thrush. The candida fungus would have been re-exposed to the bottles and forks again. Without boiling and sterilizing everything the thrush is still contagious and you may have another outbreak.

The Best Cure For Migraine Headaches

About 30 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches, according to the National Headache Foundation. Fortunately, our understanding of migraines continues to deepen, leading to the emergence of a variety of effective treatments. If one treatment doesn't cure your migraine headaches, don't give up. Work with your doctor until you find the treatment plan that is best for you.

Prevention

Prevention is the best cure for migraine headaches. To prevent future migraine attacks, keep a headache journal. Record the onset and severity of each migraine, including factors that may have triggered or exacerbated it, such as stress, changes in weather, sleep or eating patterns, caffeine, bright sunlight or dehydration. If you're a woman, track where you are in your menstrual cycle as well. If you start to notice a pattern---such as that you get a migraine when you get less than six hours of sleep---work on eliminating that particular trigger from your life. Regulating sleep, diet and your environment can stop potential migraines before they start.

Early Intervention

Whether you use relaxation or prescription medication to cure migraine headaches, start your treatment at the first sign of a migraine. If you get an aura---a visual disturbance---prior to the onset of pain, begin treatment as soon as the aura appears. If you don't experience an aura, intervene at the first signs of migraine pain. Because migraines become progressively worse, the earlier you start treatment, the better chance you have of stopping a migraine in its tracks. To catch migraines early, make sure your medication or other treatment materials are accessible to you at all times, including during work and travel.

Treat Migraine Immediately

The longer you leave a migraine unattended, the worse it will get. It's normal to want to push through the end of the workday or finish running errands before taking time to treat your headache. But during that time, your migraine will continue to build. If possible, take a break while you wait for you migraine treatment to kick in. If you're at home, lie down in a quiet room; if you're out and about, take a bathroom break, go out to your car, or close your office door for a few moments of respite.

Traditional Medications

Pharmaceutical companies have responded well to the needs of migraine sufferers. Over-the-counter medications such as Excedrin Migraine are specially formulated to treat migraines when traditional painkillers aren't enough. Prescription medications including Imitrex, Migranal and Maxalt can stop migraine headaches in many sufferers. If you suffer chronic migraines, ask your doctor about preventative medications. Antidepressants, beta-blockers and anti-seizure medications have all been effective in reducing migraine attacks.

Alternative Treatments

If you'd rather not use medication, consider taking the herb feverfew; the University of Maryland Medical Center found that 100 to 300 mg taken daily can both reduce migraine headaches and relieve a headache already in progress. According to the American Family Physician, 150 mg of coenzyme Q10 taken daily reduced migraines in 50 percent of sufferers. Some people claim aromatherapy, massage, or acupuncture relieves their migraines, although evidence for these treatments remains mostly anecdotal.

Warning

Consult with your physician before beginning a new migraine treatment regimen. Always tell your doctor how you are treating your migraines, even if you aren't using prescription medications. See a doctor immediately if a severe headache comes on suddenly, is different from your normal headache pattern, or is accompanied by confusion, vomiting or slurred speech.

Find Fingerprints With Super Glue

Some fingerprints are easier to see than others.

Finger prints come in three varieties: plastic, visible and latent. Plastic and visible are easy enough to see because they're left on soft surfaces like dust, or colored surfaces like blood smears and wet paint. Latent prints are difficult to see because they're left on nonabsorbent surfaces like wood and glass. One way to make those latent prints appear is to treat them with Super Glue. It's the cyanoacrylate ester in the Super Glue fumes that chemically reacts to the latent prints, making them visible to the naked eye.

Instructions

1. Install your heat source in the box. If you're using a coffee cup warmer as a heat source, set it in the corner of the box and cut a very small hole for the electrical cord to run through. If you're using a 60-watt light bulb, place it at one end with a small hole for the threads of the bulb and the electrical cord to fit outside the box.

2. Lean item with latent prints against an interior wall of the box, away from the heating element.

3. Make a small cup using crumpled aluminum foil and squeeze about a nickle size of liquid Super Glue into it. The cup you've created from crumpled foil will serve as a heating dish for the Super Glue. Place the aluminum foil cup on top of the coffee warmer or light bulb so that it can be heated.

4. Place a coffee mug of hot water into the box to create humidity. The heating element should be on one side, the item with latent prints in the center and the mug on the other side. The item you are lifting prints from will between the heating element and mug of hot water.

5. Attach the lid securely to the box. The tighter the box is sealed, the better the fuming chamber can do its job of lifting prints.

6. Plug in the coffee warmer or light bulb and allow it to heat for 10 minutes.

7. After 10 minutes, open the fuming chamber and check your prints. If they didn't show up white enough, add a little more liquid Super Glue to the small aluminum foil cup, replace the mug of hot water with a fresh cup of hot water and let it heat for 10 more minutes. This reheating should make the latent fingerprints stand out more clearly.

Aloe Vera Gel Benefits For Hair

Aloe vera can be used on the hair to stop dryness.

Aloe vera may be best known for its soothing healing for sunburn or bug bites. But aloe vera benefits also extend to the hair. And any hair type can benefit from its use.

Moisture for Dry Hair

Natural hair can become dry and aloe vera can help put moisture back into dry hair. Purchase aloe gel or use a limb from an aloe vera plant and squeeze directly into the palm of your hand and apply it to your hair. Wrap your hair in shower cap and let the aloe vera set for about 30 minutes. Wash it out and style hair as normal.

Soothes Itchy Scalp

Aloe vera is well known for its ability to soothe itching irritation on the skin, and when applied to the scalp, it acts the same way. Use your finger or a cotton swab to apply a small amount of aloe vera gel or the juice from the plant directly on the itchy area. Because of the small amount used, there is no need to wash it out.

Promotes Hair Growth

Although not proven, aloe vera gel may promote hair growth when applied directly to the scalp. Taken orally, as part of a multivitamin, it acts as a cleaning agent in the body that helps promote the release of toxins and can lead to better skin and, ultimately, better hair. Several products for hair contain aloe vera, such as styling gel, shampoo and conditioners. These products are sold at retailers like Walmart and many pharmacies.

Camphor Dangers

Camphor is a white crystalline substance obtained from the tree, Cinnamomum camphora, according to the Botanical website. The name, however, has also been given to different concrete, odorous, volatile products from a variety of aromatic plants. Known as "alcanfor" in Spanish, camphor is a common ingredient in cold medicines, air fresheners, pest control products and is also used for warding off illnesses. Sold as a balm, ointment or in cube form, camphor has been shown to be a danger, particularly for children.

Dangers to Children

The Health Department of New York City has warned parents that camphor products can be very dangerous for children. If accidentally ingested, or applied to the skin, camphor products can be toxic, according to the NYC Health website. In 2008, three cases of seizures associated with camphor were been confirmed and seven additional cases were investigated. The FDA has not approved the use of camphor for cold or cough medicine. Legal products containing camphor, such as chest rubs, should be used only as directed on the label. The main symptoms of camphor poisoning can occur within 5 to 20 minutes and include nausea, stomachache, vomiting, agitation, irritability and seizures.

Camphorated Oil Warning

Camphorated oil is very dangerous, particularly in the case of accidental ingestion, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. This is because the oil is mistaken for several other over-the-counter products. The ingestion of small amounts can be fatal. Additionally, a transplacental transfer can take place and may be toxic to a fetus.

Respiratory Tract Concerns

The respiratory tract is particularly sensitive to camphor, according to the MedScape website. This is thought to be due to its stimulation of nerve endings sensitive to the cold. Camphor crosses the mucous membranes, the skin, the placental barrier and can cause hepatic neurotoxicity, which is damage to the liver and the nerves.

Reye's Syndrome Mimic

Due to its hepatoneurotoxic effects, camphor toxicity may clinically mimic Reyes's Syndrome, according to the Pub Med website. To differentiate between the two, a histologic examination of liver tissue is necessary, which requires the need for a liver biopsy. Reyes Syndrome is a deadly disease that strikes swiftly, without warning and can affect children, teenagers and adults, with the liver and brain most affected.
