Diabetes Educational Activities

Diabetes affects many people around the world, making diabetes education so important. With the proper resources, you can learn help prevent diabetes, live with the disease and understand it better in others. Gaining valuable insight into the disease begins with educational activities like quizzes, podcasts and slideshows that teach about diabetes and related subjects.

Patient Education

The National Institutes of Health offers interactive slide-shows concerning various aspects of diabetes including eye complications, foot care, meal preparation, kidney failure and high-blood pressure. Designed to educate people with diabetes, they come in various forms. You can choose the interactive slideshow that asks questions, an automatic presentation or a text summary of the tutorial in a PDF file. The Interactive tutorials are the most in-depth, with narration, multiple subjects and the ability to back up, jump forward or replay a specific slide.

Podcasts and Video

The National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse's website offers a large collection of diabetes related podcasts. Podcasts are audio files you can listen to either on your computer or on the go with an mp3 player. The site offers over 30 podcasts from the National Institutes of Health specifically related to diabetes. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention offers the "We Can be Stronger than Diabetes" video podcast (vodcast) series, covering general information and helpful tips regarding diabetes.

Quizes

Quizzes related to diabetes are available online through the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse's website. Available quizzes include a cholesterol quiz from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and a diabetic eye disease quiz from the National Eye Institute. The site also offers a Portion Distortion! quiz regarding how food portions are much larger today than in the past. The quiz also educates readers on how much exercise it takes to burn off these larger portions. While the quiz isn't specifically related to diabetes, the information within is very helpful to diabetics concerned with the food they eat.

School Activities

KidsHealth.org has an entire diabetes program available online for teachers in grades six through eight. The material features multiple articles to educate the students on diabetes and its different types. The plan includes discussion questions to get students actively thinking about diabetes and how it affects people. The lesson plan has two activities in Camp Diabetes and Pancreas on Strike. The first teaches students about the food and lifestyle changes brought on through diabetes by having them create an imaginary summer camp for diabetic children, focusing specifically on meals and activities offered at the camp. In Pancreas on Strike students learn the importance of the organ and what happens when it stops producing insulin. This exercise has students write an imaginary letter to the "Human Body Labor Board" after their pancreas submits a formal complaint. The student must explain in their letter what happens when the pancreas stops working and why they appreciate their pancreas and find its job important.

Development Of Muscles In A Fetus

Fetal Stage Development

Development during pregnancy is divided into multiple stages. The second stage, which begins in week eight of pregnancy, is the fetal stage. In this stage of growth, the fetus is more protected than the embryo was, but the fetus is still connected to the mother by the umbiclical cord and encased by the placenta to get oxygen and nutrition. During this stage, amniotic fluid continues to surround the fetus amd absorb shocks.

This stage of development, week eight to week 38, has a significantly decreased risk of miscarriage.

Muscle Development

The fetal stage is where most movement starts. At the beginning of the stage, the frame of bone structures is in place, including the head, brain, hands, feet and organs. During this stage, these grow and develop as new structures like the liver and nervous system form.

By week nine, the fetus can move its arms, head, lungs and hands. Movements, both elicited and spontaneous, are needed for the muscles and body structures to develop correctly. The amniotic fluid continues to provide the fetus with nutrition.

Paper-thin muscles begin to form between week eight and week 15 under translucent skin. During this time frame, red blood cells are produced, the liver forms, limbs lengthen, and the first hairs are developed.

Between week 16 and week 25, expediated muscle development starts with the formation of air sacs in the lungs, eye brows, fingernails, eyelashes and toenails. The nervous system develops and begins to regulate body movement. The nerve part of the ear begins to develop around week 18, and the respiratory system starts regulation.

Body fat and muscle development continues until week 35. By then, the fetus has sensory input and fully developed bones, and produces increased levels of iron, calcium and phosphorus. The lungs continue to develop,

At week 35, a fetus is fully developed and should have the necessary organs to exist outside the mother.

Embryo Stage

The first muscular development, though, happens during the embryonic stage. This stage is typically week one to week eight. During the first eight weeks, the embryo develops the essential structures including the brain, spinal cord, spleen, arms, legs, sensory organ cavities and fingers and toes.

By the time an embryo leave this stage to become a fetus, all major organs should have begun formation.

Amoxicillin In The Treatment Of Lyme Disease

Ticks transmit the bacteria that cause Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is a tick-borne disease. In the early stages (stage one) of Lyme disease, your physician may prescribe the antibiotic amoxicillin. If caught during this stage, the condition may be completely curable.

Cause of Lyme Disease

Ticks infected with the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi transmit the infection through bites. Ticks must be attached at least 48 hours to infect their hosts.

Features

Amoxicillin is a member of the penicillin-like antibiotic medicine group. It works as a bactericidal agent, an agent capable of destroying bacteria.

Benefits

Amoxicillin speeds the mending of the rash associated with Lyme disease. It also prevents Lyme disease associated joint and neurological problems.

Time Frame

Your physician may prescribe oral amoxicillin for a period range from 10 to 21 days.

Alternatives

In some cases, Augmentin XR (amoxicillin and clavulanate) may be prescribed. Physicians use this combination to treat resistant forms of Lyme disease.

Preferred Antibiotic for Children

Pregnant women, lactating women and children are typically treated with amoxicillin rather than the antibiotic doxycycline. Doxycycline may permanently stain permanent teeth in young children.

How Does Universal Health Insurance Work In Europe

Systems With Complete Healthcare

Some European countries have healthcare that is completely free and covers virtually all medical procedures. One example of this is England, which has free health care at the point of use for all individuals except for certain services, such as prescriptions and dental care. However, prescriptions, dentistry and other services that are not covered by the general healthcare system are free for children, the unemployed, the elderly and low-income families.

Mixes of Public and Private Healthcare

Germany has one of the oldest universal healthcare systems. Its Statutory Health Insurance was initially available only to people with low incomes and government employees, but over time expanded to include all German citizens. While all citizens are eligible to be covered by Statutory Health Insurance, which is funded by the government, many people opt for private health insurance. Private insurance often has additional benefits and greater flexibility. In addition, doctors are limited as to how many patients they can take using the government's plan.

Compulsory Insurance

The Netherlands has its own unique system. All citizens of the Netherlands are required to carry some form of health insurance. All insurance companies in the Netherlands are required to offer a basic plan that covers most primary care features. The premiums on all of these plans must be the same for all patients, regardless of their health status. Thus, the price of the basic compulsory insurance plan is fixed for all citizens, although other, more expensive plans are also available. Long-term care, necessary for the dying, the chronically ill and the elderly, however, is covered by a social insurance plan that is fully funded by the government.

Prevent Trigger Finger

Arthritis often causes trigger finger.

Caused by arthritis, gout or diabetes, trigger finger causes the thumb or fingers to lock in a bent position. The condition causes soreness at the base of the fingers or thumb, or painful clicking or snapping when flexing or extending. Trigger finger often affects farmers, musicians or industrial workers due to the repetitive or forceful movement of the fingers, and occurs most frequently in people between 40 and 60 years old.

Instructions

1. Reduce the activities that may aggravate trigger finger. This may require limitations on work or personal activities that require repetitive gripping motions or forceful finger movement.

2. Perform gentle finger exercises to maintain mobility in the affected fingers Exercises include laying the palm on a flat surface and lifting each finger independently or crumpling a piece of paper or cloth into a ball.

3. Massage the affected finger to reduce pain and promote circulation.

4. Soak your hand in warm water to loosen the muscles in your hand and reduce the pain or catching sensation that may occur during the day. Immerse your hand for 15 to 20 minutes and repeat several times a day if you experience positive results.

Detect Ovulation

Do you have the desire to get pregnant but aren't sure when to start trying? It's fun to work on getting pregnant but can get frustrating if the end goal of pregnancy is not reached month after month. A way to help you conceive sooner is by being able to detect when you are ovulating and schedule intercourse around that to optimize your chances of becoming pregnant. Not only can you use your ovulation knowledge to increase your chances of becoming pregnant, but you can also use it as a means of birth control and avoid intercourse or use protection during that time. Here are some ways to help you to detect when you will ovulate.

Instructions

1. What is ovulation? Ovulation is when an egg, and occasionally more than one, is released from your ovary. This is the most fertile time of the month for a woman. Each month, an egg matures and grows inside one of the ovaries and when it reaches a certain size, it is released into the fallopian tubes and moves towards the uterus.

2. Be familiar with your menstrual cycle. You can find and use an ovulation calculator online to help determine the time range for when you will ovulate. Determine when your next period is due and count back 12 to 16 days. This is when you will most likely ovulate. Women who have a 28-day cycle often ovulate on the fourteenth day.

3. A change in your cervical mucus. As you get further into your cycle, and the estrogen level rises, the cervical mucus changes texture and increases in volume. You are most fertile when the cervical mucus is comparable to an egg white--clear, stretchy, and slippery. This increase in mucus and change in texture allows the sperm to get through the cervix to meet up with the released egg.

4. Get the thermometer out. Once you've ovulated, your body temperature will rise by 0.4 to 1.0 degrees. When your ovary releases an egg, the progesterone level increases and your body temperature rises. You are considered to be most fertile in the two or three days before your body temperature hits its highest point. Keep an eye out for the rise in your body temperature.

5. Some women can tell when they've ovulated by the discomfort they experience in the lower region of their abdomen. These women say they feel activity such as mild achiness to brief moments of pain. This can last from a few seconds to a few minutes.

6. Use an ovulation predictor kit. You can purchase one over the counter at any grocery or drug store. Ovulation predictor kits detect the increase in LH (luteinizing hormone) in your urine right before ovulation, usually 12 to 36 hours before ovulation. Follow the instructions found in the kit.

7. Once you know detect ovulation, you'll have a better idea of when your chances are optimal for conception or when to stay away from intercourse, using it as a method of birth control. Either way, it is always helpful to understand what your body is doing and why!

Identify The Symptoms Of A Thyroid Disorder (Hyperthyroid And Hypothyroid)

Your thyroid regulates hormones in your body. When your thyroid is not functioning properly, there are many signs and symptoms that may go unnoticed if you don't know what to look for.

Instructions

1. It is important to remember that many of the signs and symptoms of a thyroid disorder such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are similar to other conditions so it is important to report any of these symptoms to your doctor for evaluation and possible testing.

2. If you are gaining weight or losing weight without trying or changing your eating habits, a thyroid condition may be the cause. A sluggish thyroid will slow your metabolism and an over producing thyroid may increase your metabolism.

3. Exhaustion or general fatigue may also be a clue that there is an issue with your thyroid.

4. For women, any changes in your menstrual cycle should be discussed with your physician. While very often changes in menstruation are normal, a heavy or irregular period is sometimes a symptom of a thyroid problem that needs to be addressed.

5. Bothersome constipation is also symptom of a slow thyroid. Constipation is normal from time to time but if you are experiencing regular episodes of constipation, a visit to your physician is a good idea. Constipation may also be a serious symptom of other disorders so it is important to discuss this with your doctor. Remember, there is no need to feel uncomfortable or embarrassed about this either.

6. Puffiness or swelling of the hands, feet and face may suggest an issue with the thyroid.

7. Loss of hair especially on the head and eyebrows is a common complaint among men and women with thyroid conditions.

(Interestingly enough, my dentist pointed out my hair loss on my eyebrows while I was being treated and tested by a physician for my thyroid who did not notice)

8. If you feel any bumps in your neck, you may have thyroid nodules caused by a hyperthyroid or hypothyroid. Sometimes a nodule in your neck will make it difficult to swallow or will cause your voice to go hoarse.

It is important to have any bumps in your neck evaluated immediately by a physician because this may be a sign of a more serious condition.

Get Rid Of Face Fat

In today’s green world everyone is trying to live healthier and smarter, so it isn’t any wonder that many people are trying to lose weight and get in shape. If you are one of these people but you are finding it hard to lose that pesky fat around your face, this article is for you! It will explain some simple ways to slim down your face.

Instructions

1. Losing weight in your face can easily be done by losing weight everywhere! For most, the fat that surrounds your face is either the first to go or the last to go. If you are one of the unlucky ones who see this pesky fat leave last you shouldn’t get discouraged. You can get rid of face fat by eating right and exercising. This means a sensible diet filled with fruits and vegetables and plenty of vitamins! You don’t have to go on a crash diet, just attempt to make a lifestyle change for the better. Give it time and hopefully you will see your face fat disappear.

2. Drink plenty of water. You probably already know that drinking water is good for your body, keeping it cleansed and healthy. Did you know however that drinking water could help you lose weight? It has been shown that drinking water can help decrease your appetite. It is also extremely good for your body in order to keep out toxins and anything else. Drinking water can help reduce the fat in your face just like it does with the rest of the body. Most studies say you should drink 2 to 3 liters of water a day which is a lot, so if you cannot do that try for at least 1 to 1 ½.

3. Cut down on your food intake. Just eating less, while it will help lose the fat in your face to a certain extent, won’t necessarily target only your face. There are a few things you may be consuming that could be adding to the roundness of your face, such as alcohol and soda pop. You would be surprised by how much drinking less soda and mixed drinks can change the look of your face!

4. Exercise your face. This may seem like a silly idea but in all honesty doing facial exercises are good for you even if you don’t have a fat face. You’ve probably heard that smiling can help thin out your face and that is true to a certain extent. Doing these facial exercises is similar to smiling, although they are a little more in depth. Facial exercises can be anything as simple as winking one eye for 20 to 30 repetitions to stretching your mouth while flexing your cheek muscles. Directions for facial exercises can be found online or even on video. They are more popular than you might think!

5. Consider cosmetic surgery. If you are really desperate you can always consider cosmetic surgery, but before you do that there are some other things to consider. The way in which you apply make up to your face could make a difference. Use more blush, giving your face the appearance of high cheekbones, which will make your face seem thinner. The way in which you wear your hair can also make an impact on the look of your face. Having shorter hair can make your face look shorter and rounder.

Dental Periodontics Definition

Periodontics is a dental specialty concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of gum diseases. Dentists who specialize in periodontics are referred to as periodontists. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, there are 52 institutions in the United States that offer periodontics training programs. Periodontics is one of nine dental specialties that are recognized by the American Dental Association, or ADA.

Gum Disease

Dental periodontics is primarily concerned with treating and preventing serious gum infections such as periodontitis, a bacterial infection that is caused by plaque. If left untreated, periodontitis can lead to severe pain and possible loss of teeth. To treat gum infections, periodontists use techniques such as gum surgery, laser treatments or cleaning of the roots. If teeth have already been lost due to gum diseases, periodontists permanently replace teeth using dental implants or cosmetic procedures.

Prevention

Periodontics is also concerned with the prevention of gum diseases. Periodontists educate patients on maintain healthy teeth and gums and emphasize the importance of caring for the gum line. They also educate patients on the warning signs of gum disease, such as red and swollen gums, chronic bad breath and sores in the mouth.

Dental Implants

In addition to treating and preventing gum diseases, periodontics is also concerned with the long-term maintenance of dental implants, a treatment option for people who have lost teeth due to gum diseases.

Cosmetics

Periodontists help people with cosmetic concerns, such as a smile that reveals too much gum tissue or teeth that appear too short. They sculpt the gum line or remove excess gum tissue to expose more of the teeth. They also help people with missing teeth or indentations in the gum line.

Considerations

To practice periodontics, an individual must graduate from an accredited four-year college and an accredited dental school and obtain either a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM) or a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. They must complete an additional three years of training in a periodontology training program. In addition to treating patients, periodontists often conduct research or teach at dental schools.

Natural Ways To Cure Insomnia

Having trouble falling asleep is something most people experience at one time or another in their lives. Having trouble sleeping long term is known as insomnia. Although many people resort to prescription medication to help them sleep, others prefer natural ways to cure their insomnia.

Meditation

Many people who meditate report feeling more relaxed and find it easier to relax before bed. Try meditating 15 minutes before bed. By focusing your mind and quieting your body you are preparing your body for sleep. The deep breathing associated with mediation also helps relax your body. While trying to fall asleep take deep slow breaths and focus on counting to 4 on the inhale and the exhale.

Exercise Regularly

When you exercise your body temperature rises and then slowly decreases--which makes you sleepy. Exercise is also a form of stress relief, and stress can prevent you from sleeping. By exercising more each day you might find yourself more naturally getting tired and falling asleep. Never exercise more than four hours before bedtime, however. Any closer to your bedtime and you may be too keyed up to sleep.

Create a Routine

Create a nighttime ritual starting an hour to a half hour before you go to bed. Establishing a routine is a way of preparing your body for sleep. Get into your pajamas, wash your face and brush your teeth, do some gentle stretching and meditation. Your routine should be relaxing and not involve anything too strenuous that could keep you from falling asleep.

If you are in bed for more than 30 minutes, get up and leave the bedroom. Do something not too active for 10 to 15 minutes to make yourself tired. Don't watch TV or read a book--these activities are too stimulating. Page through a catalog, write down your thoughts or simply sit and pet your dog or cat to help you fall back asleep. Your body needs to associate your bed with sleep, so never lie in bed tossing and turning for more than 30 minutes, get up instead.

Natural Supplements

Over-the-counter natural supplements that help you sleep are safe and non-addicting. Supplements that help cure insomnia are melatonin, valerian root, bitter orange and St. John's wort. These supplements come with their own instructions but most should be taken 30 minutes before bed. If you are concerned that they may interact with other medications you are taking, ask your pharmacist or physician.

Food

Tryptophan is a sleep-inducing substance that is found in many foods. Eating foods that have high levels of tryptophan can help you fall asleep. Turkey, bananas, rice, eggs and dairy products are all natural sleep-inducing foods. Foods with caffeine, such as Coke or Pepsi, coffee, chocolate and ice creams with coffee or chocolate flavors should be avoided. The caffeine in these foods can keep you awake.

Eat For Anemia As A Vegan

Anemia has many causes and vegans do not have a higher incidence of the condition than do meat eaters. Still, many people believe that if a person is anemic, he or she should eat more red meat or that the person’s diet is inadequate. In reality, eating meat is an unnecessary step and is not even a healthful option (as vegans know), but diet might still be the cause of the problem, especially in newer vegans who might be eating a starchy diet or one with more processed foods than produce. Learning about the condition and causes, as well as what to eat if anemia is the result of a poor diet, are steps you can take toward feeling better.

Instructions

1. Get checked out. Only a few of the many causes of anemia relate to diet. Still, anemia caused by dietary deficiency, including iron and vitamin (folate or B-12) deficiency anemia, is the most common type. Less common types include sickle cell anemia, hemolytic anemia, anemia associated with bone marrow disease, aplastic anemia and anemia of chronic disease. Thalassemias or defective hemoglobin cause the most rare types of anemia.

2. Learn a little bit about anemia. Anemia is a condition in which a person does not have enough red blood cells. Iron is an important component of the hemoglobin in red blood cells, which transports oxygen throughout the body. Alone, anemia can make you feel lousy, but if you have any underlying medical condition, such as heart disease or diabetes, being anemic can make matters much worse. Women and children are more likely than men are to become anemic. In children, this is often due to low-nutrient diets; women tend to lose more blood via the menstrual cycle and thereby develop anemia.

3. Learn a little bit about iron. There are two types of iron: heme and non-heme. Non-heme iron makes up over half of the iron in animal tissue and all of the iron in plant foods (including nuts and seeds, fruits and vegetables), but it is not absorbed as well as heme iron. Eating foods rich in vitamin C greatly increases the absorption of non-heme iron. One-hit wonders, such as broccoli and bok-choy, are high in both iron and vitamin C.

4. Learn about the symptoms (how you might feel) if you are anemic. These include fatigue or tiredness, pain in the chest or abdomen, weight loss, weakness and dizziness that is often worse just after standing up.

5. Learn about the signs (what you or your doctor might see) of anemia: Dark, sticky, stinky stool or stool that appears black or maroon, or visibly bloody; a fast heartbeat or fast breathing; skin that looks yellow (jaundice) or pale, or that feels cold; low blood pressure; an enlarged spleen; or, a heart murmur.

6. Know what some great iron sources are and eat them every day. Despite the “ounce-for-ounce” nutritional comparisons we are all accustomed to, the body does not register foods in ounces; its source of measurement is the calorie. Calorie for calorie, many plant sources are much higher in iron than even the bloodiest red meat. For example, it takes well over 1000 calories of steak to get as much iron as you would by eating just 100 calories of dried beans or dark green leafy vegetables.

7. Know what hurts iron absorption and avoid it. Tea and coffee contain tannins, which reduce iron absorption. Calcium reduces iron absorption as well. Eat foods containing tannins or calcium (or calcium supplements) several hours before or after eating iron-rich foods.

8. Consider supplements. If you feel you must take an iron supplement, know that there are some unpleasant side effects, including diarrhea, constipation, nausea and abdominal discomfort. It can help to take the supplements after a meal, to adjust the dose or to switch formulations (e.g. iron (II) sulfate vs. iron (III)-hydroxide polymaltose complex (IPC) vs. iron bis-glycinate chelate); keep in mind that each supplement maker will claim their variety has the least documented side effects. Try them for yourself and remember, too much iron is just as dangerous as too little iron when it comes to supplements.

Alternatives To Lasik

Lasik is the most commonly used refractive surgery to improve eyesight. Basically it consists of surgically creating a flap in the cornea and pulling it back. Then a laser correction is applied. The flap is then returned to self adhere to the eye. The benefits of Lasik surgery are that there is little discomfort and recovery is very quick.

However, there are a wide variety of individuals who cannot use Lasik. One of the most common reasons is the thinness of the cornea. In this case, alternatives to cutting the flap have been designed. Other nonsurgical options also exist.

Photorefractive Keratectomy

Photorefractive Keratectomy or PKR is the predecessor to Lasik and is currently the second most popular laser correction surgery for eyesight. Instead of creating a corneal flap, the epithelial tissue of the cornea is scraped away, either with surgical instruments or with a laser. Then, the laser correction is applied. The benefit of this procedure is there are no flap complications. It is a good alternative for individuals with thin corneas. However, the pain involved may be greater and recovery time may be longer.

Lasek

Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis better known as Lasek is similar to Lasik in that a flap is created through chemical means. The chemicals will loosen the bonds and the flap is created. The laser is applied and then the flap is repositioned and a bandage is applied. This is also a good alternative when the cornea is thin. Normally with Lasek, only one eye is done at a time. The discomfort is more than with Lasik but the recovery time is significantly less than with PRK.

Epi-Lasik

Epithelial Lasik or Epi-Lasik is very similar to Lasik. Like PRK and Lasek, this is also a good alternative for individuals with thin corneas. With this procedure a corneal flap is created, but it slices a much thinner layer than occurs in Lasik. It uses a device called a microkeratomy. After the procedure, a bandage is applied.

CK or RK

Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) or Radio Keratoplasty (RK) are non-surgical procedures that work well for individuals over the age of 40 or for individuals who have difficulty on focusing on objects up close. Radio or heat energy is applied to the cornea. This causes the eye to reshape. Very few physicians are currently using this technique and there are questions as to whether the results are permanent. However, at least in the short term, immediate results occur with a minimum of discomfort. This can be performed on eyes that have previously had Lasik surgery.

Intraocular Lens Implant

In an intraocular lens implant or a refractive lens exchange, the surgeon removes the lens and replaces it with an artificial lens. This is very similar to cataract surgery. It works well when a high level of correction is needed. This is a more expensive surgery than Lasik. Since this procedure involves actually entering the eye, the risk of complications is higher than with refractive surgery.

Other

Another refractory surgery procedure is Radial Keratoplasty. This is an older procedure that Lasik has basically replaced.

Other options include implantable contact lenses such as Visian, Verisyse and ICL by Staar Surgical. Orthokerotology reshapes the cornea with contact lenses.

Silicone hydrogel offers contact lenses that can be worn for 30 days without removal. There are other extended wear contact lenses that can be obtained. Obviously traditional glasses and contacts remain a viable option.

Types Of Fingernail Disease

Injury-related dark spots disappear within a few weeks and are no cause for alarm.

We often see fingernails simply as "scratching tools," but they actually protect the tissues of our fingers. Our fingernails are made up of layers of keratin, which is a hardened protein also found in our hair and skin. According to MedlinePlus, nails can provide an indicator to how healthy you are: when your nails are smooth with a consistent color, this generally indicates good health. However, certain fingernail discolorations and change in growth rate can signal disease.

Splinter Hemorrhages

Splinter hemorrhages are identifiable by their color, a reddish-brown hue. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) explains that splinter hemorrhages appear as a fine vertical line that looks like a splinter, just beneath the nail. Splinter hemorrhages occur when blood vessels in the nail bed are damaged, usually by injury. However, MedlinePlus also notes that certain medical conditions such as infection of the heart valves cause these hemorrhages too, so it's best to see a dermatologist to positively identify their cause.

Bacterial Infections

Redness, pain and swelling in the folds of skin around the fingernail are symptoms of a bacterial infection, which is commonly caused by exposure to water and chemicals. The AAD recommends that you look out for any green discoloration, which indicates the presence of a bacterium called Pseudomonas. If you do have a bacterial infection, see a dermatologist.

Warts

A nail that changes shape can be indicative of a wart. Warts live in any part of the fingernail and can ultimately destroy it. A wart is a viral infection that affects the skin surrounding or beneath the nail. Warts can be very painful and may prevent you from using the affected finger. Your doctor can remove the wart by freezing it.

Mucinous Cysts

Mucinous cysts, described as "clear, jelly-filled papules or sacs" by the American Academy of Dermatology, appear at the base of the fingernail. These cysts can become painful and damage or deform your fingernail. Removal of the cyst is the recommended treatment for this condition.

Dark Spots or Streaks

The appearance of dark spots or streaks could be the result of an injury. If you haven't had an injury to your fingernail, go to see your doctor as in this case any dark spots or streaks could indicate a melanoma, "the most lethal form of skin cancer," says the AAD.

Psoriatic nails

If you have psoriasis, a skin condition that causes red, scaly patches, you might also suffer from nail problems. The American Academy of Dermatology lists symptoms of this condition as rippling, pitting and nail discoloration. Also, the skin beneath the nail may become reddish-brown. Additionally, splinter hemorrhages may form and the nail may separate from the nail bed or it may crumble or split.

What Do I Need To Do To Gain Weight

An underweight person needs to gain weight to be able to add muscle mass. It's also important for women trying to conceive a baby to have a high enough body fat percentage to be able to make the appropriate hormones. In either case, gaining weight should be done with the overall health in mind.

Types

Gaining weight can be done in a number of ways, but anyone attempting to gain weight should do it in a healthy manner. Gaining weight in an unhealthy way, such as cutting out all exercise or eating fast food every day may work fast, but it can lead to health problems. Gaining weight correctly should be done by eating more calories, and eating calories that will help you add muscle rather than just fat.

Time Frame

The time it will take to gain the weight depends on how much weight you have to gain and how many extra calories you are consuming. There are calorie and weight gain calculators online (see Resources below) that can tell you exactly how long it will take you to gain your chosen number of pounds at your current rate of weight gain. You also can use weight calculators to find out how many extra calories you need to gain your set amount in a specific amount of time.

Function

To gain weight, eat throughout the day. Instead of eating two or three large meals, eat five or six meals full of fruit, vegetables and protein. Eating junk food to gain weight can cause high cholesterol and heart disease. Instead, increase your protein intake to add weight with muscle. Take high-protein weight gain supplements along with your meals for a faster result. These are often marketed as protein powders that are used to make shakes.

Effects

When an underweight person puts on weight, it can lead to more physical strength and better organ function. It also can lead to more energy and healthier skin and hair. Being underweight can cause fatigue, infertility, anemia, and damage to the liver and kidneys. Gaining weight in these cases can reverse all of these adverse effects. And because underweight people are often self-conscious about their weight, it can result in better self esteem.

Warning

Anabolic steroids have been used for decades by people seeking quick weight gain. However, these substances are illegal and extremely unhealthy when used for this purpose. It stunts the growth of teenagers, and creates mental health disorders like depression and bipolar disorder. Women taking steroids lose their breast tissue, stop menstruating and often grow excess facial hair. Unlike weight gained the healthy way, the muscle that is developed when taking steroids soon disappears after the person stops taking the drugs.

Definition & Treatment Of Scoliosis

Scoliosis affects six million Americans.

Scoliosis occurs during the last growth spurt before puberty. The condition causes an individuals spine to curve sideways or away from the middle, where the spine is located. Scoliosis ranges from mild to extremely severe. The latter causes the spine to curve into the chest and hinders the lungs from properly functioning. Treatments for scoliosis vary. According National Scoliosis Foundation (NSF), about six million people in the US have scoliosis.

Definition

Scoliosis is a spinal deformity. It typically affects adolescents ages 10 to 15 years old before the onset of puberty. With this condition, the spine moves from the center, or middle of the back, towards the side of the body.

Symptoms

Scoliosis symptoms appear throughout the body, not just the spine. For instance, shoulders are uneven or one appears higher than the other shoulder. One hip and waist is more prominent than the other.

As the condition advances, an individual's spine worsens. Besides a spinal curve, the spine twists or rotates, according to the Mayo Clinic. Once this occurs the ribs on the affected side protrude out.

Scoliosis causes difficulty breathing once the spine intrudes in the area of the lungs. Back pain is another symptom of scoliosis.

Causes and Risk Factors

There are three main scoliosis causes, according to Medline Plus. With neuromuscular scoliosis, diseases like spina bifida, cerebral palsy and polio causes the spine to curve. Other conditions that involve muscle problems, such as paralysis, also cause scoliosis.

Scoliosis that is present in individuals at birth is called congenital scoliosis. This means there was a problem with the way the vertebrae formed during fetal development.

When physicians can't find the cause of the scoliosis, then it's called idiopathic.

According to the Mayo Clinic, there are risk factors associated with scoliosis besides age. Although both sexes develop mild scoliosis, girls develop the severe form at a higher rate. Another risk factor is family history. The condition is genetic.

Tests

A physician generally performs three tests to confirm a scoliosis diagnosis. The doctor requests x-rays from the front and side of the body. These x-rays show the degree of the spinal curve. A scoliometer screening also measures how badly the spine curves.

A MRI is generally ordered when a doctor sees something unusual in the x-rays or if neurologic changes have been indicated.

Treatment

There is no cure for scoliosis.

Scoliosis treatment varies according to the location of the spine, size and the expected growth of the person. Fortunately, according to Medline Plus, idiopathic scoliosis with a spinal curve less than 20 degrees requires no treatment. The individual, however, must return to the physician every six months for check-ups.

Cures 25 to 30 degrees in an individual still growing require bracing. The braces do not correct the curve, but help to straighten the spine.

For an individual with a 40 degree spinal curve or higher needs surgery. The spinal fusion surgery doesn't totally correct the spine, but prevents the curve from worsening.

Methods Of Diffusing Essential Oils

Taking a whiff of an essential oil can be soothing; having the oil diffused throughout the room can be even more beneficial.

Essential oils are reported to have a number of benefits, both on mental and physical health. One of the ways to reap these benefits is to diffuse essential oils. Diffusing essential oils means the oil is dispersed throughout the room. Essential oils are most effective when they inhabit the whole environment.

Candle Diffuser

A candle diffuser has a small receptacle over a candle for essential oils. When the candle is lit, the heat allows the essential oil to diffuse throughout the room. This is an inexpensive option, but you must be careful, as it is a candle. Also, some report that heat can alter or destroy components of essential oils, making them less effective.

Fan Diffuser

Fan diffusers come in many different shapes and sizes, so choose one appropriate for your space. There are even fan diffusers for cars. A fan diffuser usually has an absorbent pad in which you drop the oils. The air created by the fan allows the scent to disperse.

Nebulizers

A nebulizer breaks down molecules -- in this case, molecules of essential oil -- into smaller molecules. It is a small device that needs to be plugged in. The motor is located in the base and a tube on top holds the essential oils and breaks them down into smaller molecules. These are said to reap the most benefits because the smaller molecules can be absorbed by the lungs. However, nebulizers may not break down all essential oils and require regular cleaning.

Household Diffusing Methods

A number of household methods can be used to diffuse essential oils. A few drops of an essential oil can be placed onto a tissue, setting the tissue nearby you. Movement allows the essential oil to diffuse from the tissue; this does not allow the oil to diffuse as strongly as other methods, but is very cost-effective and convenient. You can also add a few drops of an essential oil to a pot of boiling water, and the steam scents the room.

Definition Of Performance Feedback

Employees

Performance feedback enables companies to assess the performance of employees. There exist different forms of feedback. Companies can either implement internal feedback measures or hire an external consulting company to gather and analyze the performance feedback. Companies can collect formal and informal feedback. Peers, managers and external customers can provide feedback on employees. Direct reports can also provide feedback on their managers to determine the managers' effectiveness and overall management skill level.

Purpose

Performance feedback helps with the productivity of the workplace. Feedback enables employees to understand the company's expectations of them. It also identifies development areas the employee needs to work on to improve their performance. With this information, employees have the information necessary to improve their job performance and stay motivated.

Process

When gathering performance feedback, companies should coach the evaluators providing the feedback. They will need to ensure that the feedback they provide contains accurate details related specifically to the employee's job performance. They should understand to omit any personal views or observations not associated with the employee's job. Organizations should make a point to provide feedback on a regular basis and often. This helps the employee to understand the issue and rectify any problems as soon as possible.

Formal Feedback

The timeline on gathering performance feedback varies among companies. Formal feedback gathering sessions can take place on a monthly, quarterly or annual review cycle. The company determines the timeline according to its performance management plans. When a formal feedback session takes place, evaluators document the outcome of the session. After completion, the documentation goes into the employee's personnel file.

Informal Feedback

Informal feedback often consists of conversations between the evaluator and the employee. These sessions occur on a more regular basis than formal feedback sessions. Peers can provide informal feedback in the form of peer rewards or a verbal acknowledgment. This form of feedback gives the employee an immediate sense of job performance and can help with employee motivation and accountability.

Measuring Feedback

To disseminate performance feedback to the executive team, the feedback data undergoes a measurement process. Since feedback can exist formally and informally, the company determines what types of feedback to include in reports and analysis. For example, a company may choose to exclude peer reviews from feedback analysis reports. Measuring feedback offers a clear snapshot of the behavior within the company and gaps in the performance of the entire workforce. This information helps during strategic planning and workforce management activities.

Grow Goji Berry Plants

Goji berry plants are very hardy once established but need some special care the first year. Plants bloom both white and purple trumpet-shaped flowers on the same plant in summer. Mature plants are extremely cold and heat tolerant (-15 to +100 degrees F) and exceptionally prolific without much encouragement. Bare root plants can be pricey, but growing from seeds is not difficult and can produce great results.

Instructions

1. Extract seeds from dried berries by placing them between two damp paper towels for one to two hours. When the berries are softened, carefully slice them open and remove seeds. Plant immediately in peat pots containing loosely packed potting soil at ¼ to ½ inch deep.

2. Keep peat pots evenly moist in indirect sun. Once seedlings are 5 to 6 inches tall, gradually expose them to direct sun for a few hours at a time per day.

3. When seedlings reach 10 to12 inches, plant the entire peat pot in well-drained soil and full sun (or in pots with potting soil, if growing as a house plant). Plants will become a thick bush, growing to a height of 10 to12 feet, so plant in a place that can accommodate their growth.

4. Dig a 2 by 2 foot hole and fill with half bedding soil and half organic compost. Plant each peat pot up to the rim so that the seedling is at the same depth as it was in the pot. Keep evenly moist until the plant is well established.

5. Mulch with organic compost around plant, leaving about 1 to 2 inches around stem open. Keep mulch 2 to 3 inches deep on mature plants.

6. Once established, plants will be very hardy. Allow soil to get partially dry before lightly watering (preferably in early morning). Do not soak. Do not water overhead; wetting the leaves can promote fungus.

7. Fertilize with organic compost and/or rotted manure at least once a year in early spring.

8. Plants will begin to produce berries when they are 2 years old, reaching high yields at 4 to 5 years. Do not prune until second year. Afterward, moderate pruning will make for a healthy plant and high yields.

Find Pressure Points On The Neck And Body

It is not difficult to find pressure points on the neck. There are many of them located in a small space. The danger in manipulating pressure points on the neck is the potential for causing damage while doing it. It is one of the most vulnerable areas of the body. Great care should be taken when pressing points on the neck since it is the conduit through which your brain and body interact.

Instructions

1. Start at the shoulders. Notice the ridge of muscle rising from each shoulder toward the neck. Press the points along the top of these ridges. Try walking your fingers along the crest. You can find pressure points all along this ridge of muscle.

2. Start climbing the sides of the neck. The pressure points continue all the way up to the skull. Press the points along a vertical line from the shoulders to the back of the ear lobes. This is the muscular part of the neck. If you go too far forward you will be pressing on the arteries and veins.

3. Stop at the base of the skull. Press the points in the gaps on both sides of where the spine meets the skull. If you are following the neck upward, it is where your fingers can not go any higher. Apply steady pressure upward and inward with the thumbs.

4. Move outward to find the pressure points under the ears. These are directly behind the ear lobes where the base of year ear meets the juncture of your jaw and skull. Press the points very carefully as you open and close your jaw.

5. Reach around to the front of your neck to find your Adam's Apple. If you are a woman, yours will not be pronounced. Locate the soft gap between your collar bones. Press the point straight into this gap with two fingers to cause immediate pain and cut off the air supply. This is a handy pressure point to know if you are being attacked.

Definition Of Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia, in simple terms, means low blood sugar. This medical condition occurs when glucose levels in the blood become too low. Glucose, or sugar, is the main fuel the body uses to operate on. Sometimes the operations needed for the body to maintain appropriate levels of glucose don't function properly, leading to hypoglycemia. Outlined below are some facts about the causes, symptoms and treatments involved in combating this condition.

Basics

When the body thinks there is too much glucose, insulin is manufactured by the pancreas to dispose of the extra glucose. When the brain notes there is not enough glucose, adrenaline is formed. The job of adrenaline is to notify the liver to use our stored carbohydrates by turning them into glucose. The glucose that is manufactured is then released into our bloodstream. When this complex system goes on the fritz, glucose levels remain too low, affecting the proper operation of the brain.

Types

There are basically two types of hypoglycemia: medication related and nonmedication related. Medication-related hypoglycemia is most often found in people suffering from diabetes. When a person with insulin-dependent diabetes is given too much, their pancreas releases too much insulin. When this happens, the blood sugar in the body is significantly reduced, bringing on a bout of hypoglycemia. Other medications can also bring on instances of hypoglycemia.

When a person hasn't eaten for a period of time, his blood sugar gets low, bringing on hypoglycemia. Reactive hypoglycemia occurs when the person has a reaction to eating carbohydrates. This type of hypoglycemia usually occurs in children or infants and is caused by eating fructose, galactose or leucine. All three of these items throw off the balance of sugar in the blood, with fructose and galactose preventing the liver from releasing a normal amount of sugar into the system. Leucine affects the pancreas by making it give off too much insulin.

If a person has problems with his liver, pituitary or adrenal glands, hypoglycemia can occur. Pancreatic tumors can also cause the condition by creating an increase of insulin into the blood.

Diagnosing Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia is diagnosed by taking a glucose tolerance test. After fasting, blood is drawn and the person is given a measured amount of glucose to ingest. After a predetermined period of time, blood is drawn again. The blood sugar levels in each of the blood samples are compared. If the blood sample is normal, the sugar level should read anywhere between 80 to 100mg for every 100cc of blood.

The three classifications of hypoglycemia are mild, moderate and severe. Once a diagnosis has been made, the cause can usually be identified by a physical exam, noting your medical history and testing.

Symptoms/Dangers

A person with hypoglycemia may suffer symptoms such as palpitations, chest pains, shortness of breath, sweating, fainting, anxiety and nausea. When the brain isn't getting the correct amount of glucose, symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, exhaustion, confusion, headaches, as well as difficulty in speaking or even seeing clearly, can be experienced. People suffering from hypoglycemia can even seem like they're drunk. In the worst-case scenario, hypoglycemia can cause seizures, coma and even brain damage.

Prevention/Solution

People suffering from hypoglycemia should avoid diets high in refined sugars or carbohydrates. Caffeine is another substance that should be avoided since it can aggravate the condition. The basic treatment for preventing hypoglycemia is to eat small meals several times throughout the day. This will help maintain a balance of sugar in your blood and not cause a spike in insulin levels. A diet high in protein and low in carbohydrates is generally recommended to keep this condition under control.

What Impact Does Smoking Have On Asthma

Asthmatics have difficulty breathing because of swelling in the passages of the airways to their lungs. This can cause life-threatening attacks. Smoke is an irritant that is especially hurtful to the lungs of an asthmatic. Tobacco smoke contains harmful substances. It can be dangerous to an asthmatic whether the person is the one smoking.

Smoking

Cigarette and cigar smoke can damage the cilia, tiny hairlike structures that are in the airways. The smoke reduces the inability of the cilia to work, so dust and mucus accumulate and trigger attacks.

Second-Hand Smoke

Second-hand smoke can be just as dangerous to asthmatics because they breathe the carbon monoxide, nicotine and tar exhaled from smokers. These substances can cause the asthmatic to cough and wheeze.

Prenatal Smoking

If a woman smokes during pregnancy, her child is 10 times more likely to have asthma. In addition, smoking during pregnancy has been linked to low birth weight, sudden infant death syndrome and premature births.

Long-Term Effects

If an asthmatic is exposed to smoking long term, the damage can cause more severe attacks as well as additional lung problems. Asthmatics are also prone to sinus infections when exposed to smoke.

Considerations

Smoking is dangerous to asthmatics, who already suffer from a serious illness. Asthmatics should not smoke and should try to avoid being around smokers.

Meditate At Work

Stress is an occupational hazard present in every career. Regardless of whether you love or hate your job, you are bound to encounter periods of stress. While stress is sometimes a motivator, prolonged exposure to extreme stress becomes unhealthy. If you feel that stress is taking over your life at work, try a few basic meditation techniques while at the office to get you through the day. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

1. Start with mindful breathing. Natural Breath is a Yogic form of Pranayma. Take full breathes by drawing air in until your stomach is fully extended. Bring your navel inward when you exhale. The benefits of mindful breathing are stable blood pressure and increased oxygen flow to the brain which results in more alert, rational brain activity.

2. Practice mindful meditation. Mindful meditation is simply focusing intently on the task at hand. This type of meditation is not recommended for jobs that require quick decision making skills or the use of power tools. However, it is beneficial in daily, routine tasks such as washing dishes and cleaning. The purpose is to focus intently on what you are doing. Think "I will now wash this glass," "I am washing this glass," "I will now dry this glass" as you do each action. If your thoughts wander, do not suppress them. With practice, wandering thoughts subside.

3. Attempt to meditate without using words. Rather than talking through actions in your head, visualize each step before doing it. Let your focus expand to include all of the sensations your body is experiencing as you perform your tasks at work.

4. Inquire if your organization has a Meditation at Work program. Many employers are versed in the benefits of meditation and Yoga in the workplace. Some offer programs for their employees to take advantage of. These programs may include a discount at a local gym, in-office yoga classes, breaks for employees to take time for themselves or even dimly-lit rooms for employees to escape work and meditate for a few minutes.

5. Join a meditation, Tai Chi or Yoga class offered by your local community center or gym. Once enrolled, you will learn alter traditional meditations, breathing exercises and positions to fit your work routine and environment.

Heart Attack & Stroke Warning Signs

Symptoms of heart disease and stroke should not be ignored and require urgent medical attention. Recognizing the early signs of a heart attack or stroke can help a person survive and decrease damage to the brain.

Significance

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, heart attacks and strokes caused the deaths of more than 800,000 Americans in 2005.

Types

Early symptoms that a stroke is occurring include a sudden headache, dizziness, trouble walking, difficulty speaking or understanding words, vision problems and numbness on one side of the body.

Types

Heart attack warning signs may include breathing problems, pain in the jaw, neck, arm, stomach or chest, heartburn, irregular heartbeat, nausea or vomiting and fainting.

Features

Symptoms of stroke may be sudden and only occur once the stroke has begun. Symptoms of a heart attack may not be obvious and can differ by the strength of the heart attack.

Considerations

According to the Mayo Clinic, warning signs of a heart attack may differ in men and women, and women are less likely than men to have obvious signs like pain in the chest.

Time Frame

Warning signs of heart disease and stroke may build up over time, while others are sudden and last only a few minutes. Treatment for certain types of strokes must be started within three hours of when symptoms started.

Warning

Warning signs of stroke or heart attack should not be ignored because the sooner a person with a stroke or heart attack is treated, the less likely they are to have significant damage or die as a result.

Reduce Running Cramps

Anxiety can cause you to breathe rapidly and can lead to cramping.

Runners commonly experience cramps. It can happen in your stomach or legs, and can make you feel as if you can't go on. However, don't let cramps stop you from running. Employ a few simple preventative measures and you will be on your way to running a marathon.

Instructions

1. Eat at least two hours before running. Never eat right before running, as you will increase your risk of getting abdominal cramps and bloating because the food has not been properly digested, says Cindy Dallow, Ph.D., a sports dietician.

2. Stretch your muscles before running. Do side torso twists by putting your arms over your head and alternating to the right. Stretch your calf muscles by sitting with both legs straight in front of you. Place a rope around the ball of your foot and grab the end of the rope. Flex the foot toward your ankle and the toes toward your knee. Repeat on the other side.

3. Pace yourself. Start your run with 10 minutes of walking or very slow running. Jerry Napp, a Tampa Bay running coach, states that the warm-up will slowly increase your body's blood flow and raise your core muscle temperature. This will help lessen your chance of cramps.

4. Practice deep lung breathing while running. Put your hand on your stomach and breathe deeply. You should feel your stomach rise and fall. Inhale for three breaths and exhale for two breaths. Military.com states this type of breathing oxygenates the muscles. Jeff Galloway, a runner who competed in the Olympics, states that improper breathing is a main cause of side cramps.

5. Hydrate your body properly. According to MedicineNet.com, a person who weighs 180 lbs. should drink at least 0.5 liters of fluid an hour for the three hours prior running. Drink a few sips of water every hour during long runs. Proper fluid intake hydrates and relaxes the muscles, thus reducing cramps.

Identify Symptoms Of Pancreas Problems

Many conditions can occur in the pancreas. These include diabetes mellitus, acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, and tumors in the pancreas. Conditions of the pancreas are treatable and the outcome is usually good. A fast diagnosis is key. Here is know the symptoms.

Instructions

Identify Symptoms of Pancreas Problems

1. Report any severe pain to your doctor. With pancreatitis, the pain generally occurs in the upper abdomen. Your doctor will probably ask you to rate the pain you are experiencing.

2. See you doctor is you experience any vomiting or fever. These are both signs of a condition of the pancreas and should always be discussed with your health care professional.

3. Tell your doctor is your stomach feels tender. A lot of times a simple touch on the stomach will cause discomfort for the sufferer. Your doctor will know what areas of your stomach should be checked.

4. Discuss with your doctor any general feelings of sickness. Feeling ill can have an absolute multitude of causes and can easily be dismissed. Be persistent if you have to.

5. Ask to be tested if you feel it necessary. No one knows your body like you do. Do not let your symptoms be dismissed. An ultrasound or abdominal CT can detect any problems with the pancreas.

Side Effects Of Phentramine

Phentramine is a type of weight loss supplement, and is not the same as phentermine. Phentramine is a non-prescription herbal supplement, whereas phentermine has been approved by the FDA as a prescribed weight loss medication. Phentramine contains bitter orange, a stimulant replacement for the banned medication ephedra. Gurana is another ingredient of phentramine, which contains massive amounts of caffeine. According to Kristi Monson, PharmD of Med TV, since the effects of phentramine have not been fully studied, possible effects may be the result of the ingredients that comprise phentramine.

Possible Side Effects

Since phentramine contains bitter orange and caffeine, both of which are stimulants, you may experience these possible side effects: sleep disturbances, such as insomnia; nervousness; shaking of the hands; feeling jittery; heartburn; and the feeling as if you are spinning. Other effects may include nausea and vomiting, increased urination, headaches, tinnitus (ringing of your ears) and sun sensitivity. Sexual issues such as impotence can occur, as well.

Severe Effects

It is important to consult a physician if you experience any of these issues: High blood pressure, or a racing or irregular heartbeat are signs of a serious condition. It is not common to feel your heart beating forcefully, to have chest pains, or to experience visual disturbances such as blurriness. If you feel as if one side of your body is going numb or weak, seek medical attention immediately, as these are potential signs of a stroke. Seizures are another severe effect of phentramine.

Ischemic Colitis

By using phentramine, you have a rare chance of developing ischemic colitis. According to the Mayo Clinic, ischemic colitis occurs when your colon is injured or inflamed due to a restriction in blood flow to the colon. If you develop ischemic colitis, you usually will feel pain on the lower left side of your abdomen. You may also experience bloody stools, frequent diarrhea, vomiting and fever.

Allergic Reactions

Having an allergic reaction to a medication is rare. However, if you develop any of the following symptoms, discontinue taking phentramine and seek immediate medical attention: rash or hives; or swollen face, tongue or lips. It is also abnormal to experience difficulty breathing, wheezing of the chest, or difficulty swallowing.

Dont's

Do not take this medication if you have existing conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes.

Do not take this medication while pregnant or nursing, as it is not known what effects there may be to the fetus. Since phentramine contains stimulants, small amounts of the supplement can be excreted into breast milk. A nursing infant may experience irritability, loss of appetite and difficulty in sleeping.

Never take more than the recommended dose. Signs of an overdose include difficulty in breathing, confusion and disorientation, hallucinations, seizures, fast heartbeat, dizziness and increased urination.

Longterm Effects Of Gum Disease If Untreated

The word periodontal means "around the tooth". There are two different types of periodontal diseases: gingivitis and periodontitis. These diseases are caused by bacterial infections of the gums.

Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease, but if left untreated it can progress to periodontitis.

There are several types of periodontitis with varying degrees of symptom severity. The most common types are: aggressive, chronic, necrotizing and periodontitis caused by systemic disease.

Early Stages

Gingivitis is often a precursor to the more severe forms of gum disease. At this stage the effects are relatively mild and may even go unnoticed. Swollen or bleeding gums and persistent bad breath are the most common problems associated with gingivitis. The gums may begin to recede away from the teeth as well.

Chronic Periodontitis

This gum disease will usually form if gingivitis is left untreated. It includes gingivitis' symptoms in addition to more severe problems. Pus may form beneath the gum line, as well as pockets or recesses. Teeth may begin to shift position and become loose. The gums may begin to recede, making the teeth appear longer. They may also pull away from the teeth all together in some spots, creating "flaps".

Aggressive Periodontitis

If left untreated, chronic periodontitis may become aggressive. Aggressive periodontitis may also occur in individuals without the chronic version. The symptoms are generally the same as with chronic, but they occur more rapidly. Aggressive periodontitis may also go into remission and even appear to disappear altogether, then have another bout of severe symptoms develop quickly.

Permanent Effects

Once gum disease has become chronic or aggressive, the bacteria below the gum line causes permanent damage to not only the gums and teeth, but also to the connective tissue and bones. Loss of bone mass in the jaw is the leading cause of adult tooth loss. Gums can continue to recede until tooth roots are exposed, which can lead to sensitivities and pain in the teeth. Surgery is required to prevent further damage and to try to correct these problems.

Prevention/Solution

There are many precautions you can take to prevent periodontal disease, which will in turn lower your risk of developing other systemic diseases. Oral hygiene is the simplest way to prevent periodontal disease. In addition to brushing at least twice a day, flossing is very important. It removes plaque, bacteria and food particles from between teeth and along the gum line. Smoking increases the risk of developing periodontal diseases, so quitting smoking lessens your risk of gum disease.
